Description
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard -from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
Role Overview
The Engineering Group Manager (EGM) - CFD leads a multidisciplinary computational fluid dynamics organization supporting Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and Electrified Propulsion systems. This role is accountable for technical excellence, people leadership, and strategic delivery of CFD capabilities that enable robust, efficient, and innovative propulsion system designs.
The EGM will guide a team of engineers focused on high-fidelity CFD analyses-including multiphase, thermal-fluid, and reacting flow simulations-spanning concept development through production validation. The role partners closely with hardware, test, manufacturing, and program leadership to accelerate decision-making through predictive simulation.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
  • Own and advance the CFD strategy supporting ICE, hybrid, and electrified propulsion systems , including motors, inverters, batteries, fuel systems, lubrication, thermal management, and exhaust/aftertreatment.
  • Provide subject matter leadership in advanced CFD methods , with emphasis on multiphase flows (e.g., spray, cavitation, oil/air, particle-laden or phase-change flows).
  • Ensure simulation methodologies are validated, scalable, and production-ready , aligned with physical testing and product performance targets.
  • Drive adoption of best-in-class modeling approaches , including high-fidelity transient simulations, conjugate heat transfer, and data-driven/model-order reduction techniques where appropriate.

People & Organizational Leadership
  • Lead, develop, and inspire a team of CFD engineers, including hiring, mentoring, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Foster a culture of technical rigor, accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning .
  • Set clear goals, priorities, and performance expectations aligned with enterprise and program objectives.
  • Enable effective cross-functional collaboration with design, test, manufacturing, controls, and program teams.

Program & Business Execution
  • Align CFD deliverables with program milestones , cost, timing, and quality requirements.
  • Balance resources across ICE and electrification portfolios, managing competing priorities and workload peaks.
  • Communicate technical risks and recommendations clearly to leadership, translating complex CFD results into actionable insights.
  • Champion simulation-driven development to reduce physical iterations and accelerate time-to-market.

Innovation & Transformation
  • Support the evolution toward enterprise virtual engineering , including integration of CFD into broader virtual development, digital twin, and SPDM ecosystems.
  • Evaluate and guide deployment of new tools, solvers, HPC/GPU strategies, and workflows.
  • Partner externally (suppliers, software vendors, academia) to stay at the forefront of CFD technology.
  • Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field (Master's or PhD preferred).
  • Strong foundational expertise in CFD theory and application , including turbulence, heat transfer, and transient flows.
  • Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams and delivering complex technical programs.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with both technical experts and executive leadership.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Deep experience in multiphase CFD modeling (e.g., sprays, cavitation, boiling/condensation, particulate flows).
  • Background in ICE systems , electrified propulsion, or automotive thermal-fluid applications.
  • Hands-on familiarity with commercial and/or in-house CFD tools (e.g., CONVERGE, STAR-CCM+, Fluent, OpenFOAM).
  • Experience integrating simulation with test correlation, design optimization, and manufacturing considerations .
  • Track record of driving simulation-led design decisions at the system and component levels.
  • Key Leadership Attributes
  • Strategic, systems-level thinker with strong technical judgment.
  • Able to balance innovation with execution in a fast-paced product environment.
  • Influential leader who builds trust across organizations.
  • Passionate about developing people and advancing engineering capability.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
