Job Description

Objectives 

The Engineering Garage Assistant supports the development of standardized repair timelines by accurately documenting each step of the automotive service process during time-and-motion studies. You will work closely with lead technicians to record procedural data, track tool usage, and ensure all investigative steps are captured for comprehensive labor time establishing. This role requires a blend of mechanical interest and administrative precision to ensure that final labor guides reflect realistic, efficient, and high-quality service standards. Additionally, the Engineering Garage Assistant will ensure that the shop remains clean and well organized and preps vehicles for delivery back to field service.  

All functions performed by the Engineering Garage Assistant are completed at the Engineering Garage located the Fountain Valley, CA. 

As a Garage Assistant, you will be expected to succeed at the following tasks: 

Candidate Responsibilities: 

  • Document labor time studies and create a final report based on findings, 

  • Demonstrated familiarity with navigating online resources, interpreting & navigating standard automotive service information, and using common MS office applications efficiently, 

  • Able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, 

  • Perform detailed daily record keeping and reporting, 

  • Locate and receive shipment of parts, 

  • Follow and promote high standards of safety, cleanliness, and organization, 

  • Normal 5 S standards - Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain, 

  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment; help clean shop, 

  • Locate, move, and wash vehicles as needed, 

  • Assist with any tasks as requested by supervisor.

  • We are seeking a motivated enthusiast/apprentice automotive technician who possesses foundational mechanical skills and a strong, proactive desire to expand their expertise in professional automotive service and repair. 

  • Detail-oriented: Able to listen closely, interpret customer narratives, and identify the underlying issue through clear, effective communication. 

  • Organized and adaptable: Able to manage multiple priorities while remaining responsive to customer needs. 

  • Customer-service focused: Maintains a calm, professional approach in challenging situations and guides customer conversations toward positive outcomes. 

  • Efficient and quality-driven: Works quickly and accurately without compromising the quality of service or documentation. 

  • Solutions-oriented: Identifies practical, effective resolutions to issues as they arise. 

  • Process-driven problem solver: Uses established procedures while applying strong investigative and problem-solving skills. 

  • Technically proficient: Demonstrates strong computer literacy and the ability to learn and use new systems efficiently. 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required 

  • Microsoft Office 365 proficiency especially Outlook and basic Excel skills 

  • Proficient typing skills 

  • DMS (Dealer Management System) experience not required but is a plus.  

  • Strong written and oral communication skills. 

  • Organizational skills (e.g., time management, scheduling, prioritizing, efficiency). 

  • Able to work and function in an automotive shop environment. 

  • Clean driving record and employment background 

Competencies / Other skills: 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills coupled with the ability to understand complex information and assess requirements, 

  • Ability to work independently with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams, 

  • Ability to work on given objectives, 

  • Excellent communicator and people motivation skills, 

  • Travel requirement (infrequent) is as needed.

The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate may not have been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At MSXi, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current hourly range is $20 to $25 based on current experience.
