Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
The role
We're looking for an Engagement Marketing Lead to help Square sellers discover more value in our products and build lasting relationships with Square. You'll lead a team that turns seller insights into strategies that drive product adoption, deepen engagement, and deliver measurable business growth.
You'll bring together audience strategy, messaging, experimentation, and channel planning to create relevant, connected experiences across the seller journey. Working closely with Product and cross-functional partners, you'll set priorities, develop your team, and balance long-term growth opportunities with business commitments. The role has global scope, with an initial focus on the U.S.
You will
  • Lead and develop the engagement marketing team. Set outcome-based goals, coach senior strategists, and define quarterly priorities, owners, and dependencies while delivering business commitments.
  • Own cross-product growth priorities. Size opportunities and allocate capacity based on seller needs and business impact. Partner with Product on adoption, monetization, and the end-to-end seller experience.
  • Establish proactive go-to-market planning. Align Product, Growth, Brand, Sales, Customer Insights, Creative, and channel partners on launch support, audiences, messaging, ownership, and resource tradeoffs.
  • Lead program-wide experimentation. Partner with Data Science on coordinated holdouts and incremental measurement. Test recommendations, messaging, incentives, and channels; use evidence and economics to decide what to scale, refine, or stop.
  • Establish communications governance. Set ownership, eligibility, frequency, sequencing, suppression, and risk-based review standards. Resolve competing messages, prevent over-messaging, and protect required communications.
  • Scale execution responsibly. Partner with Lifecycle Operations, GTM Automation, and external agencies on production and automation. Retain accountability for strategy, approvals, access, quality, and escalation.
  • Oversee portfolio delivery and partnerships. Hold owners accountable for launches, ongoing growth, incentives, and partnership commitments.

You have
  • 10+ years in engagement marketing or equivalent experience demonstrating senior-level impact. A track record of leading teams and delivering measurable portfolio growth.
  • Experience developing senior strategists and partnering with Product leaders. You can align teams, resolve tradeoffs, and establish clear accountability.
  • Strong analytical judgment and hands-on fluency with SQL and analytics tools. You can diagnose seller behavior, size opportunities, assess economics, and distinguish incremental impact from attributed results.
  • Deep experimentation experience and the ability to turn imperfect evidence into clear investment decisions.
  • Strong positioning and messaging skills, with experience connecting audience insight, product value, and channel strategy.
  • Experience building cross-program communications governance and translating strategy into actionable briefs, journey designs, and test plans with Lifecycle Operations.
  • Fluency with lifecycle platforms, personalization, and delivery controls, with experience partnering with Engineering and Data Science on shared capabilities.
  • Clear executive communication, sound judgment in ambiguity, and practical experience using AI to improve the quality or speed of your work.
  • Experience with small-business customers, multi-product platforms, regulated products, agency partnerships, or international growth is valuable.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
