About Valar Atomics

At Valar Atomics, we're redefining what's possible in energy. Our mission is to make clean, high-temperature nuclear power scalable—unlocking abundant energy for industry, hydrogen, and next-generation manufacturing. We are a team of builders, engineers, and operators who believe nuclear energy should be fast to deploy, factory-made, and built for the real world. Our first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah will demonstrate how advanced nuclear systems and fuel fabrication can power the future. Joining Valar Atomics means becoming part of a company where autonomy, ownership, and impact exist at every level.

The Role

We're seeking a highly skilled Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Engineer to support the design, installation, and maintenance of power and control systems across our plant. You'll ensure the reliable operation of electrical distribution equipment, instrumentation loops, and control systems while maintaining compliance with applicable codes, standards, and safety practices. Your work will directly enable safe, repeatable plant operations as we bring our pilot plant online and scale toward factory-made nuclear deployment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and review single-line diagrams, loop diagrams, wiring schematics, cable schedules, and I/O lists.
  • Specify, size, and select cables, conduit, control panels, junction boxes, instruments, and protective devices, ensuring proper grounding, shielding, and segregation of power and control wiring.
  • Prepare and review technical specifications, datasheets, and equipment requisitions.
  • Support installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical and instrumentation systems, coordinating with contractors and construction teams to ensure correct implementation of drawings and standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve field issues related to power, instrumentation, and control systems, and interface with automation engineers to ensure seamless integration with PLC, DCS, and SCADA systems.
  • Provide ongoing support for the operation of motors, drives, switchgear, MCCs, UPS systems, transmitters, analyzers, and control valves.
  • Develop and execute maintenance procedures, calibration plans, and reliability improvements, and maintain accurate documentation including as-built drawings, test reports, and loop checks.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC/IEC, ISA, IEEE, NFPA, OSHA, and company-specific standards.
  • Contribute to hazard and operability (HAZOP), SIL/LOPA, and risk assessments, and champion safe work practices for electrical and instrumentation activities.
  • Produce typical deliverables including single-line diagrams and load lists, cable and conduit routing layouts, instrument loop diagrams and termination drawings, panel wiring diagrams and I/O schedules, equipment datasheets, and commissioning procedures and test reports.

You Will Be Successful in This Role If

  • You have a strong understanding of electrical and control system design and can move fluently between design intent and field execution.
  • You read and develop P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and control narratives with confidence.
  • You manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously without losing track of detail.
  • You communicate clearly with contractors, automation engineers, and operations teams to keep installations on plan.
  • You exercise strong judgment in the field and raise issues early when something doesn't match the design or the standard.
  • You take ownership of documentation quality, recognizing that accurate records are the foundation of safe operations.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3–8 years of relevant experience in process plants (oil & gas, petrochemical, power generation, chemical, or related industries).
  • Strong knowledge of low-voltage power distribution, instrumentation systems, PLC/DCS control, and industrial communication protocols.
  • Proficiency in engineering software tools such as AutoCAD, EPLAN, ETAP, or similar.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including NEC/IEC, ISA, IEEE, NFPA, and OSHA.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Familiarity with control philosophies, loop tuning, and process safety systems.
  • Experience contributing to HAZOP, SIL/LOPA, or other formal risk assessments.
  • Exposure to nuclear, advanced energy, or other safety-critical industries.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
