About the Role

Uber is launching AV Labs to accelerate the autonomous technology ecosystem. We're building out a high-velocity team of multi-disciplinary experts to turn real-world operations into high-quality data for our autonomous partners. This team is focused on the hardest problem in AV today: unlocking real-world, long-tail driving data. Autonomy is now a data race—and Uber has an edge: We collect rare, real-world driving data at a scale and capital efficiency no one else can match.

Our AV Labs Hardware team is pioneering the next-generation E/E architecture for our cutting-edge L4 data collection vehicle fleet. As an Electrical Engineer, you will design, develop, integrate, and validate electrical hardware from early concept through prototype builds and vehicle integration. You will work closely with senior electrical engineers and cross-functional teams to translate system requirements into reliable circuit, PCB, power distribution, and electrical interface designs.

This is a highly hands-on role with a strong focus on day-to-day electrical design, prototype bring-up, laboratory testing, troubleshooting, and design validation. You will help ensure that our hardware performs reliably across demanding automotive electrical, environmental, and vehicle operating conditions.

What You Will Do

  1. Design & Develop Electrical Hardware: Design circuits and PCB assemblies for autonomous vehicle hardware, including power distribution, compute, storage, sensor interfaces, and vehicle interface electronics. Own schematic design, component selection, design analysis, and PCB design reviews with consideration for SI/PI and EMI/EMC.
  2. Bring Up & Troubleshoot Hardware: Perform hands-on bring-up, characterization, and debugging of prototype hardware. Troubleshoot circuit, power, communication, and system-level issues using electrical lab equipment, perform root-cause analysis, and drive design improvements.
  3. Validate Electrical Designs: Develop and execute Design Validation Plans (DVP) to verify electrical performance, power integrity, thermal performance, protection and fault behavior, and communication interfaces. Support EMI/EMC, environmental, and automotive electrical testing and drive issues to resolution.
  4. Support Vehicle Electrical Integration: Support electrical hardware integration into autonomous vehicle platforms and prototype builds. Collaborate with E/E Architecture, Mechanical, Firmware, Software, Harness, and Vehicle Integration teams to resolve vehicle-level electrical and interface issues.
  5. Support Design Release: Maintain schematics, BOMs, and design/validation documentation, and participate in engineering design reviews. Support component qualification, engineering changes, prototype builds, and technical collaboration with suppliers and manufacturing partners.

Basic Qualifications

  1. Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline with 3+ years of hands-on experience in electrical hardware design, development, integration, and validation. Demonstrated ability to independently own circuit-level design and validation tasks while working within a broader system architecture.
  2. Core Electrical Design & Validation Expertise: Strong understanding of analog, digital, and power electronics fundamentals with hands-on experience designing and validating DC/DC converters, power distribution, protection circuits, and common digital interfaces. Experience performing schematic capture, component selection, PCB development, prototype bring-up, hardware debugging, root-cause analysis, and engineering validation. Strong laboratory skills using oscilloscopes, electronic loads, power supplies, multimeters, current probes, differential probes, and related measurement equipment.
  3. EDA, Documentation & Engineering Tools: Experience with professional schematic capture and PCB development tools such as OrCAD, Altium Designer, or equivalent. Ability to read and interpret component datasheets, application notes, schematics, PCB layouts, interface specifications, and engineering drawings. Experience developing engineering test procedures, documenting validation results, and communicating technical findings clearly across multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Automotive & Autonomous Vehicle Hardware Experience: Experience developing electrical hardware for automotive, robotics, autonomous vehicles, aerospace, or other complex electromechanical systems. Familiarity with automotive 12 V and/or 48 V electrical systems, power distribution architectures, automotive-grade component selection, transient protection, sensor interfaces, and vehicle electrical integration.
  2. High-Speed Interfaces, Signal Integrity & EMI/EMC: Experience with automotive communication interfaces such as CAN/CAN-FD and Automotive Ethernet, as well as high-speed interfaces such as PCIe, GMSL/FPD-Link, USB, or Ethernet. Strong understanding of Signal Integrity (SI), Power Integrity (PI), grounding, shielding, filtering, and EMI/EMC mitigation techniques for PCB, harness, and system-level designs.
  3. Design Validation & Automotive Standards: Experience developing and executing Design Validation Plans and performing electrical, environmental, thermal, and EMC validation. Familiarity with automotive standards and test methods such as CISPR 25, ISO 16750, LV124, or related standards. Experience with automotive electrical transient testing, component derating, tolerance analysis, worst-case circuit analysis, DFMEA, DFM/DFA, and systematic failure analysis.
  4. Prototyping, Automation & Cross-Functional Development: Demonstrated success bringing up and debugging prototype hardware and resolving interdisciplinary electrical, mechanical, firmware, and vehicle integration issues. Experience developing engineering test fixtures and automated hardware test systems using Python or similar scripting languages. Experience working with component vendors, PCB/PCBA suppliers, contract manufacturers, or automotive suppliers to support prototype builds, design iterations, and production readiness.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
