Director, Technical Readiness

College Board - Operations

Location: This is a remote role. Candidates who live near CB offices have the option of being fully remote or hybrid (Tuesday and Wednesday in office). All CB employees are required to occasionally travel to meet in person for business purposes.

Role Type: This is a full-time position

About the Team

College Board's Operations division is a best-in-class digital assessment delivery and customer engagement function that supports millions of students and thousands of test centers, annually. The Operations team is also leading exciting work to advance user experience using innovative solutions, products, and technology to enhance the end-to-end delivery of digital assessments and all aspects of customer support. Within Operations, the Assessment Delivery Operations (ADO) team is responsible for the successful execution of digital assessments like the SAT and Advanced Placement (AP) examinations, working closely with partners across College Board, the education sector, and beyond to improve testing technologies, customer experience, and outcomes. ADO’s User Readiness team ensures every district-level member, school-level educator, and test taker has what they need, and takes the critical actions required, to succeed on test day. This is done through multi-channel community engagement, effective digital communications, curated technical guidance, and risk-based outreach.

About the Opportunity

As the Director, Technical Readiness, you will make sure every testing environment is technically ready for digital testing, from the networks and devices students test on to the platform changes coordinators need to know about. You will serve as the assessment delivery requirements owner and primary liaison to the Bluebook team, translating technical and platform requirements into clear guidance that coordinators, school technology staff, and internal teams can act on across all College Board assessment programs. You will help support network engineer resources dedicated to this work, working closely with product, technology, and test day delivery teams to set readiness standards, spot technical risk early, and help prevent issues before they reach students on test day.

In this role, you will:

Technical and Platform Readiness Requirements (40%)

  • Own the translation of technical and platform changes into clear requirements and guidance for each audience. Audiences include test administration coordinators, technology monitors, school technology staff, and internal technical support teams
  • Maintain current technical readiness requirements for Bluebook, College Board’s digital testing application, and coordinator tools
  • Partner with product and technology teams early in the release cycle to identify the operational and user impact of upcoming changes
  • Contribute to operational readiness for new platform pilots by documenting technical requirements and readiness procedures
  • Develop the technical content for readiness communications and resources, partnering with the Digital Engagement team on channel and delivery

Network and Device Readiness (35%)

  • Help support network engineer resources dedicated to large and commercial venue network risk analysis, providing technical direction and staying hands-on with complex readiness issues
  • Define network and device readiness standards for school-owned testing devices and College Board loaner devices
  • Design readiness checks, diagnostic guidance, and troubleshooting resources for coordinators, support teams, and field staff to use in resolving issues
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex network and device readiness issues, partnering with technology teams and vendors to resolve them
  • Analyze technical incident trends to find root causes, and recommend changes that reduce preventable testing incidents
  • Coordinate with supply chain partners on loaner device requirements and readiness

Cross-Functional Partnership (25%)

  • Partner closely with the test day delivery team to align technical guidance, share release impacts, and support technical escalations during testing windows
  • Equip community engagement and proactive outreach partners with the technical knowledge coordinators need
  • Track and manage readiness work and requests in Jira and Salesforce
  • Document durable processes and guidance so technical knowledge is shared across teams rather than held by individuals

About You

  • Expertise in technical readiness, IT operations, or technical program work, with 5-7 years of experience translating technical requirements for non-technical audiences
  • Deep, currently knowledge of network environments, such as bandwidth, firewalls, content filtering, and allowlisting, and of managed device fleets across common operating systems, with the credibility to work closely with and support network and system engineers
  • Experience managing technical change: assessing the impact of software releases or platform updates and preparing users for them
  • Strong technical writing skills, including turning complex technical information into clear, step-by-step guidance
  • Experience analyzing incident or support data to identify root causes and recommend preventive fixes
  • Experience partnering with product, engineering, and vendor teams on requirements and escalations
  • Proficiency with Jira and Salesforce
  • Preferred: Experience in K-12, higher education, or enterprise IT environments. Technical certifications such as CompTIA Network+ are welcome but not required
  • A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • The ability to travel 4-6 times a year to College Board offices or on behalf of College Board business

All roles at College Board require:

  • A passion for expanding educational and career opportunities and mission-driven work
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for emerging technologies, with a willingness to experiment with and adopt new AI-driven solutions and comfort with learning and applying new digital tools independently and proactively.
  • Clear and concise communication skills, written and verbal
  • A learner's mindset and a commitment to growth: welcoming diverse perspectives, giving and receiving timely, respectful feedback, and continuously improving through iterative learning and user input.
  • A drive for impact and excellence: solving complex problems, making data-informed decisions, prioritizing what matters most, and continuously improving through learning, user input, and external benchmarking.
  • A collaborative and empathetic approach: working across differences, fostering trust, and contributing to a culture of shared success
  • Authorization to work in the United States

About Our Process

  • Application review will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. This role is expected to accept applications for a minimum of 5 business days.
  • While the hiring process may vary, it generally includes: resume and application submission, recruiter phone/video screen, hiring manager interview, a performance exercise relevant to the role, a panel interview, a conversation with leadership and reference checks.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
