Director of Strategic Operations, Litigation Support

Full-Time, Remote / Salary, Exempt / Includes Benefits, PTO, Flexible Schedule, Equity

Steno is growing! We're looking for a Director to join our winning team and support our mission of redefining court reporting and litigation services for modern law firms. We're a diverse team from all over the country (and beyond) and we're crazy about pushing the boundaries of an outdated industry.

Litigation Support Services  (court filing and service of process) is one of the most exciting parts of our business. It's a newer service line that took off on its own, our clients rave about it, and it's growing fast. Now it needs a builder. Someone to take everything that's great about it today and put a scalable foundation underneath it. This is a build role, not a stewardship role.

In this critical role, you'll partner with the leaders who run this business day to day and own what comes next, including the operating model, the technology strategy, and the growth plan that takes us into our next phase.

Who are you?

We're looking for an individual who likes tackling complex, ambiguous problems and turning them into strategy and operations that hold up. You're comfortable making decisions with imperfect information, crunched timelines, and finite resources. You've landed complex builds, and you can tell us about one that stuck and one that didn't. You're proactive, highly organized, and you bring people with you rather than around them.

If you're looking for a company that offers support, guidance, an abundance of killer giphys, and unlimited potential to grow into your best self, Steno is for you.

On a regular basis you will

  • Set the strategic roadmap and annual planning goals for the service line, and run the whole portfolio as one program with clear dependencies and decision points
  • Design the operating model for filing and service of process, end to end from intake, quality control, fulfillment, vendor management, to billing handoffs.
  • Build the guardrails a business like this demands, where mistakes are largely irreversible and a missed filing deadline can't be retried
  • Codify what lives in people's heads today into systems, playbooks, and tooling a new teammate can execute against
  • Own the technology strategy for the service line, and turn operational strategy into requirements our product and engineering partners can actually build against
  • Make the build-versus-buy calls such as filing platform independence, service-of-process infrastructure, automation etc.
  • Find where automation and AI genuinely change the cost and error curve, and where we need to double down on a human touch
  • Own the growth plan and its sequencing across cross-sell into our existing client base, expansion, and new service offerings
  • Partner with Sales and Enablement on the commercial playbook that includes positioning, what we promise, and the client intake standards that protect delivery
  • Own the market view such as competitive landscape, where the segments are going, and the client research that tells us what to build next

You're gonna crush it if

  • You have 7+ years experience in a strategic operations, business operations, consulting, or similar role, ideally at a high growth startup
  • You have excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a data-driven mindset
  • You've shipped internal tooling alongside a product and engineering team, and can write requirements engineers respect
  • You have strong  leadership skills with the ability to influence and collaborate across departments.
  • You have a track record of scaling operations, teams, or processes into new markets, jurisdictions, or service lines as a business grows
  • You have excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a data-driven mindset

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary - $150,000 - $190,000; incentive bonus included
  • Premium Medical, Dental, & Vision Coverage – options for you and your family, with 100% of premiums covered for some plans – well above industry benchmarks.
  • Wellness/Mental Health - shared benefits to be used among employees and families
  • Flexible Paid Time Off - allowing employees to find balance in their lives
  • Options of Equity - we know our success is nothing without our team
  • Access to a company-provided 401(k) account
  • A home office setup and a monthly stipend to offset internet and phone costs

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
