About the Role:
We are seeking a Director of Revenue Technical Accounting to lead revenue accounting policy and technical assessments. As our products, pricing models, and commercial arrangements evolve, this leader will help the business grow while maintaining consistent, well-supported revenue accounting.
This role will serve as a key partner to Sales, Alliance, Deal Desk, Legal, Revenue Operations, and Finance. The ideal candidate combines deep ASC 606 expertise with practical business judgment, communicates complex issues clearly, and translates accounting conclusions into processes that can scale.
What You'll Do:
Technical Accounting and Policy
- Lead the evaluation of complex customer arrangements under ASC 606, including license subscriptions, consumption and usage-based offerings, flexible commitment pools, enterprise agreements, OEM arrangements, and reseller and managed service provider models.
- Assess revenue implications of AI offerings, including bundled services, capacity and token-based pricing, consumption commitments, and evolving monetization structures.
- Establish and maintain revenue accounting policies covering performance obligations, standalone selling prices, variable consideration, contract modifications, material rights, principal-versus-agent considerations, and contract acquisition costs.
- Prepare clear, audit-ready accounting memoranda documenting relevant facts, authoritative guidance, judgments, and conclusions.
Commercial and Business Partnership
- Advise Sales, Deal Desk, and Legal on nonstandard contract terms, identifying accounting implications early and recommending practical alternatives that support business objectives.
- Partner with Product, Pricing, and Finance on new offerings and go-to-market initiatives, establishing accounting treatment and operational requirements before launch.
- Evaluate how contractual rights, provisioning, activation, service availability, and consumption affect revenue recognition.
- Develop contract review guidelines and training that help business partners recognize terms requiring accounting review.
- Partner with FP&A to assess the implications of significant transactions and new offerings for revenue forecasts and key metrics, including ARR and NPAVC, and clarify their relationship to GAAP revenue.
Financial Reporting Controls and Audit
- Provide technical oversight of significant revenue judgments, estimates, and unusual transactions during quarterly and annual reporting.
- Partner with Revenue Accounting and Financial Reporting on revenue disclosures, remaining performance obligations, contract balances, and related reporting requirements.
- Lead discussions with external auditors on revenue accounting positions and coordinate supporting evidence.
- Design and strengthen controls over technical assessments, contract review, and new product approval, supporting SOX compliance and consistent policy application.
Systems Processes and Leadership
- Translate technical conclusions into requirements for billing, revenue systems, data capture, and operational workflows.
- Partner with Finance Systems and Revenue Operations to improve automation, data quality, and the traceability of revenue data dashboards.
- Partner with Revenue Operations and Finance Systems on targeted AI and automation initiatives to improve contract review, accounting documentation, and revenue workflows while maintaining appropriate validation, control-owner review, and accountability.
- Build and mentor technical accounting talent and lead cross-functional initiatives as the business scales.
What You'll Need:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; active CPA.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including substantial experience applying ASC 606 to SaaS or technology arrangements.
- Experience in public accounting and/or a technical revenue accounting leadership role at a complex public technology company, including preparing/reviewing revenue accounting memos and advising go-to-the market team on complex deals based on revenue recognition guidance.
- Strong understanding of subscription, usage-based, channel, and multi-element arrangements.
- Demonstrated ability to research complex accounting issues, develop defensible conclusions, and prepare high-quality technical memoranda.
- Experience working with external auditors and supporting public-company reporting and internal controls.
- Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and explain accounting implications in clear business terms.
- Strong judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proven experience utilizing AI technologies to enhance decision-making, streamline workflows and processes, improve efficiency and drive business outcomes.
Bonus Points:
- Experience in cybersecurity, enterprise software, cloud services, or artificial intelligence industry.
- Experience assessing SaaS license, Pool license, consumption commitments, OEM arrangements, reseller programs, or managed service provider models.
- Experience supporting new product launches, international expansion and M&A revenue integration.
- Familiarity with NetSuite, Salesforce/CPQ, enterprise revenue management systems, and data platforms used in revenue reporting.
- Experience leading teams and improving accounting processes through automation.
