At Marvell, you can affect the arc of individual lives, lift the trajectory of entire industries, and fuel the transformative potential of tomorrow. For those looking to make their mark on purposeful and enduring innovation, above and beyond fleeting trends, Marvell is a place to thrive, learn, and lead.

Your Team, Your Impact

The Director of Product Engineering for Optics role will lead the end to end product engineering of cutting edge silicon photonics–based optical components for co packaged optics (CPO) and next generation scale up networks. This role requires deep technical expertise in optical and IC technologies, strong manufacturing and NPI leadership, and the ability to build and lead high performing engineering teams. The Director will drive technical excellence, operational rigor, and cross functional collaboration to deliver high quality, cost effective products from early development through high volume manufacturing.

What You Can Expect

  • Technical & Product Leadership
    • Lead product engineering for optical products including light engines and chiplets, with primary application in CPO and scale‑up network architectures.
    • Own the product engineering strategy across the full product lifecycle—from early development and qualification through mass production and sustaining.
    • Ensure robust NPI execution and successful production release, meeting schedule, yield, cost, quality, and reliability requirements.
    • Serve as a technical authority in silicon photonics, optical components, and manufacturing practices, guiding design-for-manufacturing (DFM), testability (DFT), and scalability decisions.
  • Manufacturing & Operational Excellence
    • Own sustaining product engineering for high‑volume manufacturing, driving yield improvement, cost reduction, and continuous quality enhancement.
    • Partner closely with Operations, Supply Chain, Foundry, OSAT/CMs, and Quality teams to ensure manufacturing readiness and long‑term supply robustness.
    • Establish and maintain disciplined engineering processes, metrics, and best practices across development and production phases.
  • People & Organizational Leadership
    • Build, lead, and develop a high‑performing product engineering organization, including hiring, performance management, and succession planning.
    • Mentor and coach engineers and managers, fostering a culture of technical rigor, accountability, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
    • Effectively allocate budgets and resources to balance innovation, execution efficiency, and business priorities.
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration & Communication
    • Lead cross‑functional alignment with Design, Test, Packaging, Quality, and Planning teams.
    • Communicate complex technical and manufacturing topics clearly to executive leadership and non‑technical stakeholders.
    • Represent product engineering in executive reviews, business planning, and customer or partner engagements as needed.

What We're Looking For

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Optical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 15+ years of experience in product and/or test engineering, with demonstrated leadership in optical modules, optical components, or closely related technologies.
  • Strong background in silicon photonics, including device integration and manufacturing considerations (highly desired).
  • Hands‑on experience with IC manufacturing processes, advanced packaging, assembly, and test methodologies (highly desired).
  • Proven track record of delivering complex optical products from development through high‑volume manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and scale engineering teams, including managing managers and cross‑functional programs.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills in fast‑paced, ambiguous environments.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and executive‑level presentation skills.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
