Equis is a set of organizations (including Equis Research, Equis Institute, and EquisLabs) working to create a better understanding of Latinos, innovate new approaches to reach and engage them, and invest in the leadership and infrastructure for long-term change and increased engagement. 

Equis is hiring a Director of Finance and is looking for someone who is passionate about the Equis mission and enjoys rolling up their sleeves and building out accounting and finance processes. This role will be initially a hands-on role which will help define and build out Equis finance and accounting team while working closely with leadership and our outside accounting firm.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Director of Finance will oversee all financial planning, reporting, compliance, and system operations for Equis, a complex multi-entity organization including both nonprofit and for-profit arms. This role is responsible for ensuring financial sustainability, effective budget management, and strategic financial decision-making in partnership with executive leadership. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • FINANCE LEADERSHIP
    • Lead on financial planning and analysis including forecasting, budget, and cash flow management for a multi-entity organization
    • Prepare P&L, balance sheet, cash flow statement, grant reports, program financial reports, debt and/or bank reporting and various financial analysis for a range of audiences - from the board of directors, to members of the leadership team and program directors.
    • Maintain, update, and create internal control policies and procedures, and ensure compliance with GAAP and tax regulations.
    • Work hand-in-hand with the Managing Director, Executive Leadership, and Development team to build out long-term forecasts that ensure Equis’ sustainability.
    • Identify and secure external auditors, and serve as the primary point of contract to implement audit recommendations.
    • Work closely with the Senior Development Director to track incoming grants and ensure funds are allocated and recorded appropriately.
  • ORGANIZATIONAL ADMINISTRATION
    • Act as advisor and strategic partner to Executive leadership, Managing Director, and Program Directors by aligning day to day cash flow with budgetary plans and annual programmatic plans
    • Design, implement, and roll out an annual budgeting process for the entire organization and programmatic teams.
    • Ensure proper utilization and allocation of both restricted and unrestricted funds.
    • Oversee and delegate financial service vendors, including  tax prep, audits, monthly accounting, etc. 
    • Oversee and manage internal AP/AR processes.
    • Oversee Equis’ financial health. 
  • FINANCIAL SYSTEMS
    • Design financial dashboards to increase transparency and adoption to allow for more timely report generation for both overall high level decision making, down to day-to-day individual program spend tracking. 
    • Ensuring cost sharing agreements are accurately and timely followed including managing staff time tracking and overhead costs
    • Review and support internal documentation for staff training to ensure success with internal reporting needs and develop standard operating procedures when needed. 
    • Design a support team that meets the needs of multiple for profit and non for profit entities
    • Design and oversee the seamless integration and efficient functioning of all financial systems, including Sage Intacct, Ramp, Gusto, and related platforms. 
  • SUPPORT FUNCTIONS
    • Work closely with the HR to support payroll processing, employee benefits administration and reporting. 
  • TEAM MANAGEMENT
    • Manage, support, and train finance team
    • Coordinate with external accounting firm to ensure accurate and timely monthly book closing.  
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A bachelors degree in accounting, finance or related field
  • 8+ years of financial operations experience in for profit and/ or non for profit entities within the field of progressive organizations, or a closely related industry
  • Experience managing and building multi-million dollar budgets that include restricted and unrestricted funds that are spread across multiple entities
  • Experience supervising and developing finance staff
  • Experience collaborating and building relationships with cross function teams. 
  • Advanced Excel/Google Sheets skills and experience in building and managing financial software systems such as Sage Intacct Knowledge of Sage Accounting
  • Demonstrated history and understanding of handling multiple complex entity structures that occasionally interact with one another via cost sharing agreements
  • Outstanding collaboration and presentation skills with diverse audience groups 
  • Demonstrated history of proactive attitude and high degree of self-direction; with a history of positively collaborating with high-level principals 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to present financial reports, findings, and projections in a digestible manner to various audiences
  • Experience in facilitating short, mid, and long term cash flow management while addressing sensitive timelines, deadlines, and competing priorities
  • Experience managing relationships with external auditing firm, accounting firm, or legal counsel
  • Demonstrated experience with generally accepted accounting principles
  • Strong alignment with Equis’ mission and is keenly aware of how Equis fits into the broader news and political context
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Experience in 501 c(3) and/ or 501 c(4) compliance
  • Prior experience with cloud based accounting systems, budgeting systems, and payroll platforms like Gusto. 
  • Degree in accounting, business, or nonprofit management a plus
  • CPA accredited
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer 
  • The ability to communicate with colleagues, partners, and clients via phone, video call, and email
WORK ENVIRONMENT

Equis is a national remote office environment with team members located across all continental U.S. time zones. Candidates should be prepared to either work from home or a location of their choosing that is located within the continental United States.  

This position requires the ability to work core hours Monday through Friday in your local time. This position will require occasional nights and weekend work and some in-person attendance for all-staff or department level events, approximately 2 per year, which require overnight travel. 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

This is a fully remote (USA only), full-time position, exempt with occasional domestic travel and a competitive salary range of $125,000-$160,000/year. This salary range represents a good faith estimate of what Equis may pay for this position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as budget availability and commensurate with the selected candidates’ experience.
