The Position

Arevon is recruiting for the position of Director, Development, an outstanding opportunity for individuals seeking an exciting, high-growth work environment in one of the most important industries of the 21st century.

Job Description

The Director of Development will play a key role in bringing utility-scale solar and energy storage projects from conception into construction in locations across the United States.

The Director of Development will be responsible for advancing Arevon’s existing project pipeline of 8+ GW, as well as working closely with the Greenfield and M&A teams to identify new opportunities. The Director will lead a team of project development managers, associates, and analysts to advance projects through all aspects of the development process including real estate acquisition, discretionary permitting, tax abatement negotiation, title and survey work, and community engagement. The Director will interface and coordinate with internal resources including engineering, interconnection, legal, project finance, and construction to advance projects to Notice to Proceed.

This position may be based in Scottsdale, AZ, or remote with 25-50% travel estimated.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategy and implementation of development activities including real estate acquisition, discretionary permitting, tax abatement negotiation, and community engagement.
  • Assess impacts and risks to project development critical paths, develop mitigation plans and communicate these impacts to pertinent parties.
  • Hire, manage, and mentor a team of 2-5 project developers to advance development activities across a portfolio of projects.
  • Supervise, along with the Director of Real Estate, project real estate efforts including land leasing efforts, title reports, ALTA surveys, etc.
  • Facilitate project permitting and negotiation of local tax abatements, road use agreements, development agreements, etc.
  • Engage positively and network within the landowning communities to bring new solar development opportunities to fruition, overcoming objections, and educating stakeholders on the benefits of the project to their community.
  • In collaboration with Arevon's Interconnection team, track interconnection processes, read and understand interconnection studies, and participate in interconnection agreement decisions.
  • In conjunction with the Community Relations team, establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including elected officials, regulators, utilities, RTOs, and community leaders to support project development.
  • Manage internal relationships including but not limited to legal, procurement, finance, development, engineering, and construction, and asset management.
  • Understand and uphold company goals, strategies, and best practices to originate and execute project development objectives.
  • Communicate effectively with Senior Management on project risks and mitigations.

Experience Requirements

  • 6-10 years' prior experience in renewable energy development with demonstrated progression of project management responsibility.
  • Experience in more than one energy market (ERCOT, WECC, MISO, etc.)
  • Ability to comprehend complex documents and clearly and effectively communicate project risks and impacts.
  • Self-starter with strong intercultural communication, problem solving, organizational, decision making, and negotiation skills.
  • Experience in managing and leading a team.
  • Proven success developing multiple projects at one time.
  • Proven track record in:
    • Land identification and acquisition
    • Title Curative Efforts
    • Discretionary Permitting
    • Interconnection Study Process
    • Community Engagement
    • Adapting to challenges and learning swiftly
    • Meeting project budgets and schedules
  • Working with internal and external teams, being involved in the project from conception through construction.
  • Regular domestic travel expected up to 50% of the time.
  • Highly proficient in MS Office and associated applications.
  • 300+ MW of projects successfully completed.

Education Requirements

  • 4-year degree from an accredited university in engineering, mathematics, business, or similar discipline (Advanced technical or business degrees encouraged)
