What You'll Do

Epic Games’ Fortnite team is looking for a Design Director to lead our Competitive (Ranked + Tournament) experiences across Fortnite, including Battle Royale, Reload, Fortnite Creative, and other ecosystem modes. You will be responsible for establishing the vision for - and directly owning the outcomes of - Competitive features across the Fortnite ecosystem. This includes collaborating with peers in Game Design, UXUI, Production, Art, and QA to ensure overall product success. This role particularly emphasizes working with leaders outside of the development organization, such as Product Management, Data Science, and Marketing, and aligning with Executive Stakeholders across the organization. While the overall focus is on ranked and competitive experiences, the impact of this role necessarily crosses into unranked experiences as the shepherd of core game systems like matchmaking.

In this role, you will
  • Be directly responsible for Competitive success across the ecosystem.
  • Guide Game Design for Competitive, such as systems, progression, and rewards, while leading feature development for UXUI and Ranked holistically
  • Work with key partners in Tournament and Competitive operations, such as the Fortnite Championship Series (FNCS)
  • Work with both 1st party and 3rd party experiences, such as Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) and creator-driven competitive modes
  • Monitor and maintain healthy Ranked Play across all modes at Epic
  • Attend playtests and play the live game to provide feedback, and identify practical solutions to problems
What we're looking for
  • 7+ years of experience across game design and product management; a hybrid role that bridges the gap between these disciplines
  • Highly analytical – eager and comfortable monitoring data streams and working daily with Data Scientists, Analysts, and Product Managers to align on product goals
  • Strong stakeholder management across teams (Progression, Marketing, Product Management, Gameplay Design, Competitive Operations, and Art & Cosmetics)
  • Deep experience in Competitive PvP Games is a plus, but not required; exposure to PvE, Mobile, F2P, Live Service, or broader Progression Systems (XP) is welcome
  • An innovator in the space that tracks industry trends and defines new ones, thinking abstractly in spaces without precedent to define
  • Demonstrated talent for empathizing with players and a deep understanding of player motivations, forms of play, and the effects of goal setting on play
  • Interest in ranked and competitive play in Fortnite, Battle Royale, or other multiplayer games, with an understanding of what makes them effective

This role is open to multiple locations across the US (including CA & WA).

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
