Job Description:

WHO We Are:

Self-Help started in 1980 with a focus on economic inequality especially in communities that have faced systemic barriers in building wealth. At the core of what Self-Help does is a drive to create and protect ownership and economic opportunity. In other words, we’re committed to economic justice! Economic Justice means that all communities have the basic infrastructure they need to thrive, from high-quality schools to grocery stores selling fresh food resources that support opportunity at a neighborhood level regardless of demographics, income, or wealth. Since our founding, we’ve constantly sought to find new ways to pursue greater economic justice: from providing fair and affordable loans to working with partners to demand that lawmakers change unjust policies.

We are seeking a Director of Business Development & Community Engagement to join our Yakima, WA team!

WHAT You’ll Do:

DEPOSIT RAISING, COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT

  • Develop and implement regional strategies for cultivating mission-aligned deposits to support credit union growth.

  • Directly develop and maintain critical relationships with socially responsible and mission-oriented investors. This includes but not limited to high-net-worth individuals, mutual funds, SRI funds, nonprofit organizations, faith-based organizations, foundations, banks, universities, financial advisors and others.

  • In conjunction with branch leadership coach & mentor branch staff to increase productivity in deposit-raising and identifying potential lending opportunities.

  • Maintain familiarity with critical internal systems and a general understanding of the various products and services available across the organization.

  • Support the preparation of proposals and reports for potential depositors and investors including financial and impact due diligence requests and coordinate closely with our credit union leadership, finance team, DPI, executive and special projects staff, and other relevant stakeholders.

  • Represent Self-Help through speaking engagements on conference panels, workshops, and webinars. Serve as the “face” of Self-Help to external audiences and partners, and work to increase Self-Help’s overall visibility in a way that supports increased deposit and loan cultivation.

  • In conjunction with branch management and Marketing-Communications develop and direct a targeted marketing strategy for deposit outreach, including print and digital/social media platforms.

  • Stay attuned to local social, economic and political issues and community concerns, sharing the impact of those issues and concerns with appropriate Self-Help colleagues in a timely manner so appropriate strategies/actions to address may be developed.

  • Identify and explore opportunities for collaboration and initiating efforts to bring individuals and organizations together that can affect change. While bringing these groups together will set agendas, convene and facilitate assembled groups, when necessary.

  • Maintain dialogue and make regular contact with key depositors and loan relationships.

  •  Initiate and evaluate high impact opportunities through relationship building, asset mapping and other means. Engages potential partners interested in collaborating on mission-focused projects.

  • Market Self-Help’s loans to referral sources and potential borrowers through activities including 1-on-1 meetings and presentations.

OTHER

  • Participate and support other team/cross-team projects and priorities, as needed.

  • Act as a change agent to drive Self-Help’s economic inclusion initiatives by integrating supplier diversity and the use of businesses owned by women and people of color in third party contracting and vendor management for relevant products and services.

  • Perform other duties as may be deemed necessary.

WHAT You’ll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and at least 10 years of experience in community development, fundraising, financial services and/or other related fields, or an equivalent combination of experience and related advanced degrees.

  • Deep knowledge and expertise in financial services, marketing, and/or community development finance preferred.

  • Strong commitment to Self-Help’s mission: creating and protecting ownership and economic opportunity for all, especially people of color, women, rural residents and low-wealth families and communities.

  • Preference for working in organizations that place priority on teamwork and collaboration. Sensitivity to and experience with issues affecting low-wealth communities, and a desire to work in culturally- and socially diverse organization that strongly values collaboration.

  • Strong ability to build and/or expand networks and referral sources that lead to increased deposits and partnerships.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
