WEB DESIGNER

RALLY is seeking a Web Designer to join our design team and help create compelling websites and digital experiences for organizations working on some of today’s most pressing social and political issues.

In this role, you’ll work across the full web design process, from early website architecture and wireframes through visual design, responsive systems, prototyping, developer handoff, and quality assurance. You’ll bring strong visual design fundamentals alongside an understanding of UX, accessibility, and how websites behave across browsers, devices, and content management systems.

You don’t need to be a front-end developer, but you should understand the grain of the web. You know how HTML and CSS shape the interfaces you design, how layouts respond across breakpoints, and how technical considerations, integrations, accessibility, and content structure influence design decisions. You’re equally comfortable thinking through a site map, refining a typography system, building a scalable Figma component library, and collaborating with developers to make sure the final site delivers on the design intent.

This is a role for a collaborative, detail-oriented designer who can move comfortably between creative exploration and systematic thinking. You can present your work persuasively, explain the reasoning behind your decisions, manage your own work across multiple concurrent projects, and collaborate closely with strategists, communicators, developers, project managers, and fellow creatives.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Web & Visual Design
  • Design thoughtful, visually compelling websites that translate client brands, strategies, and content into clear, engaging digital experiences, applying strong fundamentals in layout, typography, color, hierarchy, and visual accessibility.
  • Create website designs from early visual exploration through high-fidelity execution, including page designs, wireframes, prototypes, and supporting web graphics.
  • Build organized, scalable Figma files using components, Auto Layout, variables, shared styles, and reusable design systems.
  • Create prototypes and interaction examples that clearly communicate functionality, responsive behavior, transitions, and web animation to clients and development teams.
  • Prepare clear developer handoffs and collaborate with developers through implementation, including quality assurance across devices and screen sizes to ensure the final website reflects design intent.
UX & Web Fundamentals
  • Contribute to website architecture and UX through sitemaps, navigation systems, wireframes, user flows, information hierarchy, and common interaction patterns.
  • Design responsive experiences with a working understanding of HTML, CSS, browser behavior, breakpoints, flexible layouts, and common website integrations, collaborating with developers to ensure designs are achievable and scalable.
  • Apply web accessibility best practices and WCAG principles across visual design, content hierarchy, interactions, forms, focus states, and other interface decisions.
  • Bring a foundational understanding of SEO, including metadata, semantic content structure, heading hierarchy, image alt text, internal linking, and how search engines crawl and interpret websites.
Collaboration & Project Management
  • Present design concepts and recommendations to clients with confidence, clearly and persuasively articulating the thinking behind design decisions and responding thoughtfully to feedback.
  • Collaborate closely with strategists, communicators, project managers, designers, developers, and other interdisciplinary team members throughout the design and development process.
  • Own and manage your workflow across multiple concurrent projects, communicating proactively about progress, timing, questions, and blockers while balancing project timelines, budgets, and scopes.
  • Contribute to ongoing design and content updates for RALLY’s website as part of internal creative initiatives.
  • Stay current on evolving web design, UX, accessibility, and technology practices while contributing ideas and improvements to RALLY’s creative processes and tools.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3–5 years of professional experience in web, digital, UI, or interactive design, with a strong portfolio demonstrating polished website design, strong visual fundamentals, responsive thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Advanced proficiency in Figma, including Auto Layout, components, variables, prototyping, design systems, and developer handoff.
  • Strong understanding of responsive web design and working knowledge of HTML and CSS concepts, including layout systems, breakpoints, browser behavior, and common web interactions. Production-level coding is not required.
  • Strong understanding of UX fundamentals, including website architecture, sitemaps, navigation, wireframes, user flows, and information hierarchy.
  • Working knowledge of web accessibility and WCAG principles, along with foundational knowledge of SEO and how website structure and design affect search discoverability.
  • Be curious and open to exploring AI tools and new capabilities that can be incorporated into your workflow to increase efficiency and overall quality.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, including the ability to articulate design decisions and navigate internal and client feedback professionally.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage work across concurrent projects, collaborate effectively on interdisciplinary teams, and work within established timelines, budgets, and scopes.
  • A proactive, detail-oriented, solutions-focused approach with curiosity about design, technology, and mission-driven work.
Nice-to-Haves
  • Experience with CMS and website-building platforms such as WordPress, Webflow, Framer, Squarespace, or similar tools, including an understanding of how CMS structures can influence website design.
  • Experience with motion design, web animation, analytics, conversion optimization, performance, or technical SEO.
  • Experience working in an agency, client-service, nonprofit, advocacy, or social-impact environment.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
