Question: We have a small/medium-sized business (“SMB”) client looking to move to the cloud. They have a website server, a database connected to that website server, and a company email server used by employees. How would you suggest they migrate to the cloud and how would you set up the networking?

The DevOps Engineer plays a key role in building and maintaining our secure and scalable cloud infrastructure. This role partners with development and security teams to optimize our DevOps processes and implement new technologies to ensure efficient and secure deployments. This role reports to the Director, IT.

This position is an incredible opportunity to enhance skills and develop career growth by working closely with very experienced team members in DevOps, Security, and Operations. This role works on projects independently allowing professional ownership, without excessive impediments. The team is very efficient, and the environment conveys more like a "fast-paced startup" where you'll have multiple responsibilities instead of siloed into only one area. Expectations are reasonable, and Schellman strives to offer a healthy work/life balance

**Important note: There are regular morning/evening deployments outside of business hours as well as on-call rotations.

Essential Functions:

  • Identify, manage, and optimize our current AWS infrastructure with a focus on Security, Resiliency, and Observability

  • Assist the Development team in automation/performance optimizations and adherence to best practices

  • Contribute to the roadmap for assigned services and capabilities, providing guidance and expertise when designing solutions for business needs

  • Participate in R&D for process improvement and release speed

  • Partner with other IT teams, as well as business verticals, to automate manual processes with scalability, cohesion, and security in mind

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with our vendors and service providers

  • Leverage APIs to script and automate various IT operations

  • Support the evaluation and implementation of new services to address the needs of our team members and clients

  • Collaborate with the AI Team to support ML workload infrastructure, including model deployment pipelines, compute resource management, and environment reproducibility

  • Support compliance requirements in accordance with applicable frameworks (SOC 2, PCI, HIPAA)

  • Quickly identify, communicate, diagnose, and resolve technical issues

  • Build and maintain detailed and accurate documentation for our processes and workflows

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Hands-on experience with DevOps tools including: Cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP), Kubernetes, Containers (Docker/Podman), Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/OpenTofu/Ansible), git workflows (GitLab/GitHub), CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab Pipelines), Shell scripting (Bash), and Database administration (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis)

  • Solid understanding of Information Security, IAM, LDAP, APIs, and Networking

  • Strong knowledge and proficiency with Linux OS

  • Familiarity with MLOps concepts and tooling (e.g., MLflow, Kubeflow, SageMaker, or similar) and experience supporting ML pipeline infrastructure

  • High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously

  • Proven track record of proactively identifying and solving problems

  • Excellent analytical, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Comfortable working in a collaborative, fast-moving, dynamic environment

  • Self-starter with the ability to effectively problem solve, prioritize, and execute tasks with minimal direction

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant Information Technology discipline, or equivalent years of directly related experience

  • 4 or more years of overall IT experience, with 2 or more years of DevOps in a cloud-native environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AWS Certifications (Solutions Architect or SysOps Administrator Associate) — obtained or actively in progress

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
