🚀 Whatnot

Whatnot is the largest livestream shopping platform in North America and Europe to buy, sell, and discover the things you love. We’re building the future of ecommerce, bringing together community, shopping and entertainment. We are committed to our values, and as a remote co-located team, we operate out of hubs within the US, UK, Ireland, Poland, and Germany today.

We’re innovating in the fast-paced world of live auctions from fashion, beauty, electronics to collectibles like trading cards, comic books, and even live plants. Whatnot has something for everyone.

And, we’re growing. Whatnot has been one of the fastest growing marketplaces and we’re hiring forward-thinking problem solvers across all functional areas.

💻 Role
  • Drive end-to-end analysis of revenue trends and category performance, surfacing what’s working, what’s not, and what needs attention.
  • Translate ambiguous business questions into structured analyses that help teams understand the “what” and the “why” behind performance shifts.
  • Deliver descriptive analytics that help revenue teams understand current state performance across key revenue and category metrics.
  • Build forecasts and directional models that support headcount planning, sales targeting, and business growth decisions.
  • Provide insights within the context of the overall broader business and customer behaviors while given contextual specific details around individual teams needs
  • Become a trusted partner to Sales, Marketing, Account Management, and Category leaders, helping them make smarter, faster decisions based on data.
  • Build dashboards and automated reporting to support weekly and monthly business reviews, while driving clarity on KPIs that actually reflect performance.
  • Support strategic decision-making by creating forward-looking insights — identifying leading indicators, pressure-testing assumptions, and surfacing risks before they materialize.

US Based Role:

Required to be within commuting distance of our Los Angeles, Seattle, New York or San Francisco Hubs

👋 About You

We’re looking for an experienced, business-savvy Data Scientist to join our growing Analytics team and help shape how we understand, measure, and grow Whatnot. This role supports Go-To-Market teams and sits at the intersection of strategy and execution, supporting teams like Sales, Marketing, Account Management, and Category Expansion with the analytics and insights they need to drive measurable business impact.

You’ll focus on building clarity around business performance, revenue trends, and category growth through rich descriptive analysis and forward-looking forecasting. From uncovering why a key metric is shifting to modeling where we’re headed next, your work will directly influence how we invest, prioritize, and operate. Critical to this role is empowering our cross-functional teams with accurate insights in a form that empowers them to understand their business and take actions rapidly.

This is an ideal role for someone who thrives in cross-functional environments and enjoys solving open-ended business problems with thoughtful analysis, trusted reporting, and strong stakeholder partnership. Your work will help shape where we grow next, how we allocate resources, and how we define and track success at scale.

In addition to 5+ years of experience in the Data Analytics field, you should have:

  • Roles where supporting go-to-market, sales and marketing where understanding trends, connecting dots and forecasting was central to decision-making
  • Previous experience working with marketplaces, ecommerce, mobile gaming, or social media
  • Expert in using SQL and scripting languages for data analysis, reporting, and dashboarding.
  • You’re strong with visualization and BI tools (Looker, Tableau, Mode, etc.), not just for reporting, but for building tools others can use reliably.
  • You communicate clearly and influence without needing authority - business partners value your judgment and seek out your input.
  • You prioritize speed, clarity, and utility -  building tools and insights that the business actually uses, not scientific models that sit on a shelf.
  • Strong business judgment and a knack for identifying the signal in noisy data with context of the overall business implications
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills to stakeholders, leadership, and investors
  • Experience working in an environment where you have to balance rigor and speed, knowing when to push for perfection vs. ship and iterate
  • Comfortability with data warehouses and big data technologies such as Redshift, Snowflake, Big Query, Presto, Athena, Spark, DBT

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
