THE OPPORTUNITY

Silvus is seeking a Data Engineer who will report to the Director of Operations on the Business Intelligence team.

The Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the organization's modern data warehouse and scalable data pipelines that support business intelligence and analytics. This role ensures data architecture is optimized for performance, scalability, and reliability by evolving data models, monitoring pipeline health, and implementing infrastructure that supports long-term business growth.

This position is 100% onsite, Monday through Friday, at Silvus Technologies’ headquarters in the heart of vibrant West Los Angeles, CA.

The following is a list of at least some of the current essential job functions of the position. Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities at any time at its discretion.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Warehouse Architecture & Modeling: Design, build, and extend the core Data Warehouse (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift). Responsible for the physical and logical data design, ensuring the warehouse is optimized for both high-volume data ingestion and rapid analytical querying.
  • Scalability & Performance: Proactively manage the evolution of data schemas. As features are added to  the backend/CRM, the warehouse architecture will be extended to accommodate new data points while maintaining historical integrity and system performance.
  • Infrastructure Selection: Evaluate and implement the right tools for our modern data stack (e.g., selecting the right compute tiers or storage solutions) to ensure the warehouse can grow 10x without a complete rebuild.
  • Pipeline Modeling: Design, build, and optimize scalable ETL/ELT pipelines to move data from various sources into the data warehouse.
  • Pipeline Monitoring: Monitor pipeline health and data integrity, alerting the team to discrepancies before they reach the reporting layer.
  • Perform other related duties of which the above are representative.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or Mathematics with 3+ years of experience in database engineering, or High School diploma with 7+ years of experience in database engineering.

  • Strong programming skills in Python or Scala for data orchestration (e.g., Airflow, dbt).
  • Experience with API integrations and managing unstructured vs. structured data.
  • Background in database administration and performance tuning.
  • Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. Citizen, or U.S. Permanent Resident) due to clients under U.S. federal contracts.
  • All employment is contingent upon the successful clearance of a background check and drug test.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or Mathematics.
  • Experience with non-relational databases / data stores (object storage, document or key-value stores, graph databases, column-family databases).
  • Experience modernizing pipelines to reduce technical debt and improve reliability
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and comfort operating independently in ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Experience building a database from the ground up.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Lift equipment, up to 15 lbs. for the setup of demonstration and testing.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
