Sony Pictures Entertainment is seeking a talented data engineer to join the Insights, Strategy and Analytics organization. The ISA team focuses on enhancing analytical capabilities and infrastructure for internal stakeholders across television production, distribution, and marketing. As the world’s largest independent studio, Sony Pictures Television produces original content for streaming and linear networks globally, including popular series across various genres. Our series – from dramas like THE NIGHT AGENT, THE LAST OF US, and THE BOYS, to comedies like TWISTED METAL and COBRA KAI, to unscripted series like JEOPARDY!, WHEEL OF FORTUNE, and AMERICAN IDOL – are beloved by our fans and customers worldwide.

The Data Engineer II designs and builds reliable, scalable ELT pipelines that power analytics, reporting, and AI/ML applications across Sony Pictures Entertainment. This role contributes to data and analytics engineering initiatives for fast-paced, business-facing projects, partnering closely with stakeholders, product managers, data scientists, visualization engineers, and strategic analysts to deliver impactful analytics tools.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Data Engineering: Support the ingestion of new sources into SPE’s Snowflake data platform, working closely with central IT and cloud operations teams to define ingestion requirements and validate that pipelines meet business needs.
  • Analytics Engineering: Translate complex business use cases into the design of robust data models using dbt and SQL. Apply analytics engineering best practices to ensure maintainability, reliability, and performance.
  • Agile Product Delivery: Contribute to fast-paced project teams working to build new ISA tools.  Source and harmonize data from disparate systems to create consumption-ready data used by data scientists and data visualization leads. Deliver business impact within a fast-paced, agile environment.
  • Data Governance: Maintain quality, integrity, and security standards across data platforms and pipelines. Collaborate with IT, engineering, and Infosec teams on governance and compliance efforts.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Effectively communicate with non-technical stakeholders to understand business requirements and collaborate with technical partners across multiple disciplines to design elegant solutions.
  • “One Team” Mindset: Contribute to a high-performance team, collaborating openly with peers to create a team culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Business Analytics, or related fields; advanced degrees are a plus. 5+ years in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a related technical role in a production environment. Demonstrated ability to work with complex data domains and organize data assets for analytical use. Interest in business concepts, entities and relationships relevant to a TV production & distribution studio is a plus. Advanced SQL & Python skills. Experience building transformation pipelines in dbt is strongly preferred.  Proficiency with modern cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, GCP/BigQuery, AWS/Redshift) and with pipeline orchestration tools. Familiarity with CI/CD workflows, version control, and automated testing frameworks to meet data quality standards. Exposure to generative AI technologies and interest in applying AI-driven approaches to data engineering and analytics workflows. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, and inherent curiosity to understand the business systems and processes where much of our data originates. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Industry Experience: Experience in the media and entertainment industry is a plus, but candidates from other industries are welcome to apply.
  • Passion for Entertainment: A genuine interest in film and television is appreciated but not mandatory.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $120K to $160K. This role may also qualify for annual incentive and/or comprehensive benefits. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
