Job Summary:

MUFG is seeking an Analyst to join the Portfolio Management Group (PMG) within the Sponsor, Growth & Middle Market (SGMM) platform supporting the Food & Beverage, Consumer & Retail, Environmental Services, and Diversified Industrials verticals. This role will support the underwriting and portfolio management of sponsor-backed and corporate borrowers across these sectors.

The Analyst will assist with portfolio monitoring, credit analysis, underwriting support, financial modeling, transaction execution, and credit administration while developing foundational expertise in sector-focused lending and credit risk management.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong analytical skills, attention to detail, intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and the ability to work collaboratively with Senior Portfolio Managers, Relationship Managers, Credit Division, product groups, sponsors, borrowers, operations team, and internal control functions. The Analyst will be expected to produce accurate, well-supported analysis, manage multiple priorities, and contribute to high-quality execution across underwriting and portfolio management activities.

Responsibilities:

Portfolio Management

  • Support monitoring of sponsor-backed and corporate clients across the Food & Beverage, Consumer & Retail, Environmental Services, and Diversified Industrials verticals, including periodic credit reviews, ongoing risk assessment, and performance tracking.

  • Analyze borrower operating performance, liquidity, leverage, cash flow generation, debt repayment capacity, and fixed charge coverage to help identify potential upgrades, downgrades, emerging risks, and opportunities.

  • Assist in preparing internal and regulatory risk rating recommendations for review by senior team members and management.

  • Help gather and organize borrower, sponsor, Relationship Manager, and internal stakeholder updates regarding portfolio developments.

  • Track industry trends, market developments, regulatory changes, consumer demand patterns, input cost dynamics, and competitive positioning relevant to portfolio companies across the covered verticals.

  • Coordinate portfolio account information across Credit, Relationship Management, Product Partners, Operations, Compliance, and other internal teams.

  • Prepare portfolio reporting, management presentations, and ad hoc analyses for review by senior team members.

  • Support compliance with internal policies, regulatory guidance, and portfolio management procedures.

Underwriting & Deal Execution

  • Support evaluation and underwriting of leveraged buyouts (LBOs), mergers and acquisitions (M&A), recapitalizations, refinancings, add-on acquisitions, growth financings, and other lending transactions across the Food & Beverage, Consumer & Retail, Environmental Services, and Diversified Industrials sectors.

  • Build and maintain well thought out financial models, including base case, downside case, and sensitivity analyses, with guidance from senior team members.

  • Draft sections of credit approval memoranda addressing client requests, business risk, industry dynamics, sponsor support, transaction structure, financial performance, projections, valuation, key risks, and mitigants.

  • Assist in identifying structural risks, covenant considerations, deal structuring points, and potential risk mitigants consistent with bank policies.

  • Collaborate with Relationship Managers, product specialists, and Credit Division during underwriting, approval, and closing processes.

  • Participate in client, sponsor, lender, and internal credit meetings as needed.

  • Support review of legal documentation and closing activities to help ensure transactions are executed accurately and efficiently.

Transaction Administration & Portfolio Infrastructure

  • Support credit administration processes and help ensure completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of portfolio documentation.

  • Assist in reviewing and interpreting legal documentation to capture key economic and structural terms including pricing, fees, maturity profiles, collateral provisions, and covenant requirements.

  • Coordinate with Operations, Middle Office, Legal, KYC, Enterprise Value, and other control functions to support transaction closings and portfolio maintenance.

  • Help ensure credit applications, reviews, and portfolio records comply with internal standards, regulatory expectations, and documentation requirements.

  • Maintain accurate portfolio data in internal systems used for reporting, monitoring, and risk management.

  • Assist with management reporting through portfolio data collection, validation, and analysis.

Team Collaboration & Professional Development

  • Work closely with senior team members to develop credit judgment, underwriting skills, portfolio management capabilities, and sector knowledge across Food & Beverage, Consumer & Retail, Environmental Services, and Diversified Industrials.

  • Prepare accurate analyses, financial models, risk rating support, and written materials for review by senior team members.

  • Participate in training opportunities and apply credit risk management best practices, underwriting standards, and portfolio monitoring methodologies.

  • Contribute to team initiatives, process improvements, and analytical projects designed to strengthen portfolio management practices and execution quality across the covered verticals.

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required; degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field preferred (CFA or MBA is a plus)

  • Minimum 1 year experience in commercial banking, corporate banking, leveraged finance, sponsor finance, private credit, credit risk management, investment banking, or related financial services roles.

  • Foundational understanding of corporate finance, accounting, financial statements, cash flow analysis, and credit risk fundamentals.

  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.

  • Experience with three-statement financial modeling, valuation, and credit analysis

  • Ability to interpret business performance, industry trends, and transaction structures with guidance from senior team members.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to summarize analysis clearly and concisely.

  • Ability to work collaboratively, manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and respond effectively in a fast-paced environment

  • Completion of a formal credit training program is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:

The typical base pay range for this role is between $89k - $110k depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and location. This role may also be eligible for certain discretionary performance-based bonus and/or incentive compensation.
