Attributes We Value

We hire successful builders with founder-like energy who want real impact, accelerated learning, and true ownership. You bring strong role-related expertise and sharp thinking, and you’re motivated by our mission and operating principles. You move fast with good judgment, dig deep with curiosity, and make decisions from first principles, balancing speed and rigor.

You're humble and collaborative; turn zero‑to‑one ideas into real products, and you “get stuff done” end-to-end. You use AI to work smarter and solve problems faster. Here, you’ll tackle complex, high‑visibility problems with exceptional teammates and grow your career as we build the future of global banking. If that sounds like you, let’s build what’s next.

About the team

Legal & Licensing at Airwallex sits at the heart of the decisions that shape how Airwallex grows. This team backs the visionary builders transforming Airwallex into a generational financial company, sharing the journey of product development and sales alongside our business partners. You’ll help shape a global licensing footprint most fintechs wish they had, while making sure our brand and data architecture stay best-in-class for customers entering the agentic economy and ready for its regulatory demands. The hard part is helping the business move fast on product, revenue, and new-market expansion without compromising the regulatory discipline that protects the moat.

It’s a team for lawyers, strategists, and licensing specialists with commercial instincts, sharp judgment, and an obsession with customer-first outcomes. If you want to guide executive decisions and help build the licensing, structure, and judgment behind what comes next, this is where legal has real leverage.

What you'll do

As Counsel in the Product Legal team, you will be a valuable member of the global Product Legal team and will help our rapidly growing business navigate an increasingly complex regulatory landscape. Although you will be based in the US, you will have multi-regional responsibility by supporting our product and partnership strategy and advising on complex technology transactions globally. You will build strong business relationships with business teams and understand the business environment. When you don’t know the answer, you’ll know how to obtain the answer and explain it to business partners. This dynamic role is ideal for someone who enjoys wearing multiple hats and solving complex issues for our internal and external partners, is detail oriented, willing to take on challenges and changes, obsessively curious and intellectually honest, thrives on taking actions and delivering impactful results, and aims to inspire and be inspired. Experience in fintech or payments is welcomed, as is a demonstrated passion for mastering something new. Relevant subject-matter expertise may include knowledge of payments, card networks, and banking.

This role is based in New York City.

Responsibilities:

  • You will serve as a dedicated thought partner for our Strategic Partnership team and will support negotiations on complex and novel agreements with our strategic partners, help manage the process and help review and draft the agreements.

  • Provide advice and support to the product team, local legal teams, support functions, Airwallex management, and the Legal, Risk, and Compliance Department.

  • Coordinate with local counsel across jurisdictions globally to discern and devise optimal paths to market from a legal and regulatory perspective

  • Liaise with senior stakeholders of the Airwallex group, located around the world.

  • Manage external counsel and consultants on regulatory matters.

Who you are

We're looking for people who meet the minimum requirements for this role. The preferred qualifications are great to have, but are not mandatory.

Minimum qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience as a lawyer at a top firm, in-house or a combination of both.

  • Strong stakeholder management skills and ability to deal with a range of internal and external stakeholders

  • Versatility in supporting Product in an advisory role and in supporting the business on commercial documents and terms

  • Proactive, results-driven, and take ownership of your work.

  • Ability to multi-task and a team player with strong communication skills

  • Strong drafting skills

  • Ability to master new areas of the law quickly

  • High levels of professionalism, integrity, and a strong work ethic, including a readiness to lend a helping hand to teammates

Preferred qualifications:

  • In-house legal experience gained ideally in the fintech industry or financial institutions

  • Subject-matter expertise in payments, card networks, or fintech

  • Experience working with stakeholders across the globe

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
