Where Financial Leadership Meets Real World Impact

At NCIA, finance is more than numbers...it ensures the resources behind our mission are used effectively and with measurable impact.

As Controller, you’ll play a key leadership role in strengthening our financial operations, supporting strategic decision-making, and ensuring long-term sustainability across a complex, mission-driven nonprofit. You’ll serve as a true strategic partner and #2 to the CFO, lead a growing finance team, and translate financial data into clear insights for leadership and the Board.

This role is critical as NCIA continues to grow and strengthen its financial infrastructure across multiple programs and funding streams.

About NCIA

NCIA is a mission-based nonprofit organization dedicated to making a genuine, measurable difference in people’s lives across Maryland. Our work is rooted in compassion, accountability, and community impact. We serve diverse populations through multiple programs and funding streams, including Maryland LTSS, federal and state grants, and philanthropic partners. At NCIA, your expertise won’t sit on a shelf; it will actively support growth, innovation, and long-term sustainability.

What You’ll Do

Lead the Finance Function

  • Oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls in alignment with GAAP and nonprofit standards
  • Manage month-end close, financial statements, and audit processes
  • Ensure compliance with grant requirements, including federal, state, and foundation funding

Drive Financial Strategy & Insight

  • Partner with the CFO and leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning
  • Analyze financial performance and clearly communicate trends and risks
  • Support Board and committee reporting

Strengthen Systems & Processes

  • Own process improvement and internal controls, strengthening workflows, systems, and scalability across accounting, payroll, AP/AR, and reporting
  • Enhance financial systems and integrations (including automation opportunities)
  • Ensure strong controls and scalable processes as the organization grows

Lead & Develop the Team

  • Provide leadership and structure to a multi-level finance team
  • Build clarity, accountability, and development opportunities
  • Foster a collaborative, solutions-oriented environment

NCIA offers a competitive and comprehensive benefits package designed to support both professional growth and personal well-being, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 403(b) retirement plan with employer match, generous paid time off, credit union membership, tuition reimbursement, and ongoing professional development opportunities.

If you’re a hands-on finance leader who values purpose as much as precision, and you enjoy building systems, developing people, and translating financial complexity into clarity, this role was designed for you.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field (CPA and/or MBA preferred) and 5–7 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including leadership of people and complex operations

  • Proven experience in a complex, multi‑program nonprofit environment, including Maryland LTSS billing and grant-funded operations.
  • Deep knowledge of nonprofit accounting, grant compliance, audits, and regulatory requirements
  • Hands-on experience with audit coordination, budgeting, financial analysis, AP/AR, payroll, and investments
  • Strong proficiency with Sage Intacct, Martus, and Bill.com (Paycom a plus)
  • Exceptional analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to turn data into strategy
  • Ability to clearly communicate financial information to finance and non‑finance audiences alike.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
