About Criminally Obsessed: With 1,400 reporters spread across the country, Criminally Obsessed is first on the scene, uniting armchair detectives in their quest to crack the case. From short videos to long-form documentaries, our team of content producers and editors reaches millions daily across all our social media and digital platforms.

Job Summary:

You’ll pitch, research, script, edit, and produce compelling true crime content while working with reporters, researchers, newsrooms, and original sources to uncover the details that make a case truly captivating. As someone who’s obsessed with true crime, you’ll help create original, multi-platform true crime programming — from quick-turn and short-form videos to creator-led features, visual storytelling, and recurring franchises — with a focus on strong hooks, distinctive storytelling, and content audiences want to watch and share.

This role requires a strong journalism background, expertise in video production, graphic design, and an innate ability to connect with true crime audiences across platforms.  Travel may be required for content gathering, breaking news coverage, and professional development.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Original Content & Brand Franchises

  • Attend Content Strategy Sessions to pitch and develop original, social-first true crime content, including short- and mid-form narrative stories and ideas that strengthen Criminally Obsessed content buckets and recurring franchises.
  • Review assigned Sinclair markets, outside news sources, broadcasts, digital stories, raw footage, court coverage, social media and other relevant material to identify compelling stories and content opportunities.
  • Monitor breaking crime events, press conferences, hearings, trials, livestreams and other major developments to identify timely coverage opportunities.
  • Stay current on true crime trends, conversations and releases by regularly consuming relevant documentaries, series, podcasts, books, news coverage and social content, and bring those insights into pitches and content development.
  • Lead reviews and coverage of true crime streaming content, including documentaries, series and other relevant releases, bringing a strong editorial perspective to Criminally Obsessed audiences.
  • Serve as on-camera talent for breaking true crime news and major developments as needed, delivering timely, credible and engaging coverage across Criminally Obsessed platforms.
  • Support Criminally Obsessed programming as backup on-camera talent for Anne and other hosts or franchises as assigned.

Research, Reporting & Asset Gathering

  • Research and report stories using public records and reporting tools, including court documents, PACER, FOIA requests, archival materials, reputable outside media sources and direct outreach.
  • Actively pursue story leads, verify facts and gather the video, documents, images, interviews, social media posts and other assets needed to complete assigned content.
  • Manage permissions and clearances for third-party video, images, social media content and other assets while coordinating with Sinclair news teams and outside organizations.
  • Proactively communicate reporting needs, asset limitations, clearance issues, production delays, deadline risks and other potential blockers.

Content Production & Platform Execution

  • Pitch, script, shoot, present and edit original video content, and create supporting visual assets for YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and other Criminally Obsessed platforms.
  • Produce mid-form narrative and creator-led content while contributing quick-turn, short-form and daily news coverage based on editorial priorities.
  • Create platform-specific videos, social graphics, thumbnails and promotional assets that follow Criminally Obsessed brand guidelines.
  • Take ownership of assigned content from approval through completion, meeting editorial and production deadlines and ensuring all required publishing elements are prepared for delivery.

Content Performance

  • Review social and digital performance metrics and use audience insights to improve story selection, topics, hooks, formats, pacing, presentation and overall content performance.
  • Apply performance insights to refine recurring content buckets and franchises, strengthen successful formats and identify new content opportunities for Criminally Obsessed audiences.

KEY DELIVERABLES

  • Review assigned Sinclair markets and relevant outside sources each morning.
  • Submit 3-5 developed story pitches by 9:30 a.m. EST each day, identifying the proposed content bucket, audience hook/CO angle, available assets, key details, latest developments and recommended treatment.
  • Produce 3–5 quick-turn or short-form in-feed videos and 2 mid-form narrative videos each week, with an emphasis on creator-led and on-camera storytelling. Complete a minimum of 5 videos per week.
  • Maintain an active pipeline of original mid-form, on-camera and franchise ideas rather than relying solely on assigned content.
  • Meet all assigned deadlines and communicate proactively when reporting, assets, clearances or other issues could put a deadline at risk.
  • Once immediate assignments are delivered, proactively identify additional stories, pursue leads, gather assets, review upcoming coverage dates and deadlines, and prepare future productions.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the manager.
  • Assigned schedule is generally 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. EST, including a one-hour meal break and two 15-minute breaks. Hours may flex based on business needs, including occasional after-hours or weekend coverage when warranted. Overtime must be approved in advance by a manager.
  • Occasional travel, approximately 10–20%, may be required for conferences, training, content gathering, breaking news or on-site coverage.
  • Must be able to safely lift, carry and maneuver equipment or gear weighing up to 25 pounds while following proper safety protocols.

The base salary compensation range for this role is $70,000 to $90,000. In addition, this role may be eligible for a discretionary quarterly bonus, which would be awarded based on individual and company performance. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidate’s relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and geographic location. Full time positions are eligible for benefits that include participation in a retirement plan, quarterly and annual incentive plan bonuses, life and disability insurance, health, dental and vision plans, flexible spending accounts, 15 paid vacation days, 2 paid personal days, 9 paid holidays, 40 hours of paid sick leave, parental leave, and employee stock purchase plan.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
