The Clinical Nurse III – Maternal Child Health role provides direct patient care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act for assigned patients in Maternal Child Health departments including Perinatology, LDR, Mother/Baby, LDRP, and NICU. The nurse collaborates with other disciplines of the health care team to ensure the delivery of safe, timely and appropriate quality patient care. This includes providing physical assessments, nursing interventions, pain management, medication administrations, specimen collection, meeting nutritional and emotional needs, and education and discharge needs of the patients assigned. Utilizes the nursing process based on evidence-based best practices to meet patient care needs. Evaluates and adjusts the nursing care process as necessary with consultation as needed and confers with the appropriate resource personnel when making ethical/legal/medical dilemma decisions. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental and hospital standards, policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.
In addition to the above responsibilities, the Clinical Nurse III is involved in Hoag Committee/Council with at least 50% attendance, communicates quarterly to UPC (Unit Practice Council) on committee/council work, and completes four supplemental activities a year.
QualificationsEducation and Experience
- Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) required.
- Three years’ continuous employment as a FT/PT RN in an acute care hospital.
- Sixteen (16) hours of lactation education and four (4) hours of demonstrated bedside hands-on competencies within 6 months of hire required.
License Required
Registered Nurse in the State of California - Current and in good standing.
License Preferred

Current BLS (AHA) certification upon hire, and
National certification in specialty area, and
Additional department specific certification requirements as follows:
Irvine Birthing Suites – LDRP, Clinical Nurse I MCH - Post-Part only: NRP
LDR - 5 East- Clinical Nurse I MCH – Post Part only: NRP
LDR - 5 East and Irvine Birthing Suites - LDRP: NRP; ACLS; AWHONN/Relias Fetal Monitoring (basic or intermediate) certification required upon hire; AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring certification required within two years from hire and must be renewed every 3 calendar years.
Mother/Baby – 7 East: NRP Certification
NICU – 6 East:
NRP Certification, and
All Clinical Nurses in NICU – 6 East (Newport) who work with low birth weight babies must either:
Complete the Small Baby Care Specialist Program within 6 months of hire, or
Have at least one year of experience within the past five years caring for extremely low birth weight infants (substitution subject to leadership approval)
Irvine NICU:
NRP Certification, and
Either:
Complete the Small Baby Care Specialist Program within 6 months of hire, or
Have at least one year of experience within the past five years caring for extremely low birth weight infants (substitution subject to leadership approval)
Perinatology and Irvine Perinatology:
AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring upon hire and must be renewed every 3 calendar years;
Employees hired after 1/1/2020: Ultrasound certification required within two years from hire
1010-74010 Irvine Perinatology:
AFHM - Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring Course
Point of Care Ultrasound Certificate required within 90 days of hire.
Certifications Preferred
- MBU-Mother/Baby: NRP or IBCLC or MNM RNC.
- NICU: NICU didactic course and STABLE.
- PERINATOLOGY: Ultrasound certification.
