Position Overview

The Breaking Social Video Producer is a multimedia social storyteller responsible for producing quick-turn videos and graphics for COURIER’s state social channels.

Working as part of the rapid-response team, this role helps translate breaking news, trending stories, and important civic issues into engaging short-form social content. Social Producers are responsible for researching stories, scripting and editing short videos, and producing social graphics that help audiences quickly understand what’s happening in their communities.

This role works closely with the Breaking & Trending Social Assignment Editor, who assigns stories and provides editorial guidance. The ideal candidate is a news junkie who is deeply online, understands how people consume news on social media, and thrives in a fast-paced digital environment. They are comfortable working quickly, switching between video editing and graphic production, and adapting stories for different platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Social Video Production

  • Produce short-form social videos covering breaking news, trending stories, and key civic issues.
  • Research, script, and edit videos designed specifically for social platforms, including vertical and mobile-first formats.
  • Work quickly to turn around timely content while maintaining accuracy and editorial integrity.

Graphic Production

  • Create clear, visually engaging social graphics using tools like Canva.
  • Translate complex news developments into accessible visual explainers for social audiences.
  • Ensure graphics align with COURIER’s brand style and editorial voice.

Story Development & Pitching

  • Pitch story ideas and social formats based on emerging trends, news developments, and online conversations.
  • Identify stories with strong visual or social storytelling potential.
  • Work with the assignment editor to develop coverage around breaking news and trending topics.

Platform-Native Storytelling

  • Help adapt stories for different social platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
  • Stay up-to-date on social media trends, formats, and storytelling styles.
  • Identify creative ways to package news for maximum engagement and clarity.

Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of experience producing social media content, digital journalism, or video production
  • Proficiency editing video in Adobe Premiere Pro or similar editing tools
  • Experience creating social graphics using Canva\
  • Strong writing, grammar, and storytelling skills
  • Solid understanding of how news and culture spread on social media
  • Ability to work quickly and manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong research and fact-checking skills

Preferred

  • Experience working in a newsroom or digital media organization
  • Familiarity with short-form video formats on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube
  • Experience sourcing and verifying user-generated content
  • Basic motion graphics or caption design experience
