We are Hiring!

Location: La Jolla, CA; Edina, MN; Chicago, IL or Remote (If not commutable to a Palomar office)

The Details:

We are seeking a driven, curious, and high-energy AVP, Actuarial with a strong pricing background to join our growing Actuarial team. This is a hands-on role: you'll serve in the front-line to work directly with Underwriting, Product, and executive segment leaders to share insights and shape pricing decisions in real time. This role is built for someone who can move across segments and bring a broad, adaptable perspective to Palomar's business. The ability to build trust quickly with cross-functional partners and work efficiently is a must.

What will you do:

Apply and help shape Palomar’s in-house pricing toolkit to drive day-to-day pricing analyses and deliver fast, well-grounded results to partners

Serve as hands-on pricing actuary for UW, Product, Ceded Reinsurance and segment leadership by connecting pricing insights to broader business results and strategy

Lead rate reviews and indications across multiple segments, adapting approach to each segment’s unique risk profile and data maturity

Help build out a framework for monitoring competitive and market pricing trends – an emerging capability with room to shape how it’s done

Evaluate new programs, renewals, and rate adequacy, bringing an actuarial lens to business decisions in real-time

Build and maintain strong working relationships with MGAs, supporting pricing and program structure where applicable

Flex across segments as business priorities shift, building broad exposure across Palomar’s diverse book

What we are looking for:

8+ years of actuarial experience—ideally majority in pricing, with some reserving and reinsurance background

FCAS, or high-functioning ACAS

Working proficiency in AI-supported building, alongside R, Python, SQL, etc to leverage and contribute to Palomar’s in-house pricing toolkit

Proven ability to go from 0 → 1 in ambiguous, still-forming, environments.

Deep understanding of actuarial workflows and the practical needs of pricing analysis, not just the theory.

Strong communicator who can build bridges and translate between technical analysis and key stakeholders.

Team leadership or mentoring experience is a plus for future growth, though near-term focus is hands-on delivery

Thrives in dynamic, fast-changing environments with minimal red tape.

Prior experience mentoring or managing technical staff is a plus.

We love people who want to:

Build strong relationships through transparency, trust, and respect for each other.

Work in an agile environment, with a resilient mindset to find creative solutions to challenges.

Collaborate and celebrate diverse perspectives, promoting inclusivity and equality.

Do the right thing with strong conviction and integrity.

Be bold and innovative to help make an impact.

Demonstrable track record of working autonomously and driving progress

Be intellectually curious, think creatively, and pragmatic

If you thrive in a dynamic environment, and like working with happy, authentic, talented people, you'll enjoy a career with Palomar!

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
