The Assistant General Counsel is a part of the Office of the General Counsel and a senior member of the Risk Management Department, providing support with ethical issues to more senior members of the Office of the General Counsel, Professional Responsibility Committee, and Firm Attorneys. They will serve as a subject matter expert in various areas of risk, including AI and Information Governance.  They will be expert in the responsible and ethical use of AI in the legal context and the efficient and responsible management and use of information and firm knowledge. This position will also provide guidance and enforcement of compliance policies and issues arising from e-discovery, subpoenas, file transfers, and client file retention.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a key point of contact for questions regarding firm policies, procedures, and ethics requirements, including, where appropriate, advising on professional responsibility, ethics, confidentiality, and compliance matters.

  • Work closely with the firm’s Risk Management, AI & Knowledge, and IT departments to develop best practices and ensure consistent use of AI tools and data management.

  • Promote a collaborative and inclusive culture within the Office of General Counsel, including helping manage and train other attorneys and staff in the OGC. 

  • Complete special projects as assigned by senior members of the Office of General Counsel and Risk Management team.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

  • Juris Doctorate, and an active law license in good standing in at least one state.

  • Eight+ years of experience in a law firm, preferably in a litigation role.

  • Expertise in ethical use of AI and principles of sound Information Governance.

  • Strong knowledge of professional responsibility rules and law firm operations, and the curiosity and drive to expand areas of expertise as new issues facing large law firms continue to evolve.

REQUIRED SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Outstanding judgment, diplomacy, and communication skills, with the ability to gain the confidence and respect of partners, associates, staff, management, and clients.

  • Ability to provide clear and concise information under strict deadlines.

  • Strong organization skills, ability to prioritize and meet tight deadlines, and customer service focused mindset.

  • Appreciation for the confidential nature of information and ability to disseminate similar obligations to others throughout the firm.

The expected salary range for this position is $275,000 - $375,000.  Final compensation will be determined based on several factors, including but not limited to, relevant experience, qualifications, skill set, and geographic location.

Qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records will be considered for the position in accordance with the California Fair Chance Act.
