AI Systems Engineer

Full-time. Remote within the continental United States.

Prolego helps large enterprises use AI to change how they work. We build and operate production systems inside our clients' environments, working alongside their teams to find opportunities and put useful software into people's hands.

We're looking for a creative engineer who wants to help clients rethink workflows and turn promising ideas into reliable systems. That takes imagination, sound engineering judgment, and the patience to help people adopt a new way of working.

You'll also help us build an AI-native company. By automating routine work, we want to give our engineers more time for investigation, creative problem-solving, and substantive work with clients. You'll help shape how Prolego works as well as what we deliver.

• Work directly with clients to understand their operations and propose opportunities they may not have considered. Help them choose useful next steps and understand the value and tradeoffs.

• Design and build AI applications and the capabilities behind them, including data processing, retrieval, tools, APIs, and integrations with existing systems. Projects may involve helping employees find reliable guidance, reconcile complex documents, or complete recurring tasks.

• Work with client experts to define what good performance looks like. Build evaluations from real examples, investigate failures, and use the evidence to improve the system.

• Help deploy software within client environments, working with their technical teams on cloud services, testing, CI/CD, security, and release processes. Follow the work into production and improve its reliability, performance, and operation.

• Earn clients' trust through patience, responsiveness, and clear communication. Challenge assumptions respectfully and recommend a better approach when one is available.

• Use AI tools to improve how you and the team work. Automate routine development, testing, documentation, and operational tasks while taking responsibility for the quality of the results.

You'll have substantial ownership, with close support from Prolego's leadership and experienced colleagues. We work through difficult questions together, share what we learn, and give engineers room to make decisions and carry the work forward.

We expect engineers to form their own views and contribute to decisions. If you see a better approach, we want you to say so, whether you're speaking with a colleague, a client, or Prolego's founder. Explain your reasoning, listen to other perspectives, and be willing to revise your position as you learn. Asking for help and surfacing uncertainty are part of that responsibility.

Much of our work happens in live video conversations with senior business leaders. You need strong spoken and written English and the ability to explain complex ideas, ask thoughtful questions, and discuss tradeoffs clearly. We value people who combine confidence in their judgment with patience and respect for others.

• Strong software engineering fundamentals, practical Python experience, and evidence that you can deliver working software.

• A demonstrated ability to learn unfamiliar technologies and domains quickly, apply what you learn, and improve your approach through feedback and experience.

• Initiative and follow-through: you can investigate problems independently, make progress through ambiguity, and communicate when you need input or support.

• Sound client judgment. You can understand the underlying business need, manage expectations, and connect technical decisions to the work people need to accomplish.

• Curiosity about how a business operates and the ambition to make a meaningful difference through your work.

You don't need experience in every technology we use. LLM applications, data systems, APIs, cloud deployment, CI/CD, observability, and DevOps practices are all relevant. Bring your strengths and a willingness to follow a problem across the stack, learning what you need to solve it.

Independent consulting, technical services, or other work with direct client responsibility is especially relevant. Experience shaping an engagement, explaining its value, managing expectations, and carrying a solution into use is valuable, whatever your background.

Teaching experience is also valuable. The ability to explain unfamiliar ideas, adapt to another person's understanding, and patiently help them develop confidence and independence translates directly to our work with clients.

• Compensation of $165,000 to $215,000, based on experience, plus a performance bonus.
