ADVANCEMENT MANAGER

ABOUT PACIFIC COUNCIL

As a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization, the Pacific Council engages members and the community through programs that connect local experience to global affairs, including renowned speaker events, conferences, international and national delegations, leadership development, and community volunteer efforts.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Pacific Council on International Policy is seeking a highly organized, strategic, and detail-oriented Advancement Manager (AM) to support the execution of the Council’s fundraising, sustaining membership, and organizational priorities. Working closely with the President & CEO and senior leadership, the successful candidate will serve as a key advancement partner, helping ensure the CEO is prepared, informed, and supported in cultivating donors, members, institutional partners, and other key stakeholders.

The AM will manage critical advancement functions including corporate, foundation, and individual prospect research; donor strategy and stewardship; executive briefing preparation; sustaining member billing; CRM management; and development operations. The role will also help translate executive priorities and conversations into clear next steps, coordinate follow-through across internal and external stakeholders, and ensure high-priority relationships and initiatives continue moving forward.

While primarily a non-frontline fundraising role, the AM should bring a strong understanding of fundraising strategy, donor cultivation, stewardship, and the development cycle, along with the judgment, initiative, and organizational skills necessary to anticipate needs and serve as a trusted partner to the President & CEO and senior leadership.

This is a hybrid position including in-person team meetings and events.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct high-level research to identify, profile, and evaluate prospective individual major donors, corporate partners, foundations, and other institutional funding opportunities.
  • Build and maintain qualified prospect pipelines and target lists to support sustaining member recruitment, individual giving, corporate sponsorships, and grant opportunities.
  • Analyze prospect capacity, giving history, philanthropic interests, organizational affiliations, and existing relationships to identify opportunities for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Translate prospect and institutional research into actionable fundraising intelligence, providing the President & CEO and senior leadership with recommendations that inform donor strategy, relationship development, and engagement priorities.

CEO Partnership, Donor Strategy & Executive Support

  • Partner closely with the President & CEO to manage and advance high-priority donor, member, corporate, foundation, and stakeholder relationships.
  • Prepare comprehensive briefing materials for CEO donor and stakeholder meetings, synthesizing prospect research, giving history, relationship context, organizational priorities, and recommended talking points into actionable pre-meeting dossiers.
  • Apply knowledge of fundraising strategy and moves management to identify and support cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship opportunities for individual and institutional prospects.
  • Manage CEO donor engagement logistics and follow-through, documenting key decisions and commitments and coordinating timely next steps, proposals, pledge agreements, and stewardship activities.
  • Anticipate advancement and external-relations needs, coordinating with internal colleagues to ensure the CEO has the information, materials, and support needed to move priorities and relationships forward.

Development Strategy & Operations

  • Provide strategic, operational, and administrative support for development initiatives, fundraising campaigns, institutional partnerships, and event-related donor touchpoints.
  • Support the development of donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies in partnership with the CEO and senior leadership.
  • Assist with fundraising materials, proposals, sponsorship opportunities, donor communications, and other materials supporting individual and institutional giving.
  • Track fundraising activity, commitments, proposals, and next steps to ensure opportunities move effectively through the development pipeline.
  • Coordinate across programs, membership, communications, and leadership to ensure fundraising efforts reflect the Council’s broader strategic priorities.

Advancement Operations & Administration

  • Manage the full sustaining member billing cycle, ensuring timely and accurate invoicing and payment processing, resolving billing inquiries, and executing high-touch stewardship to drive member retention.
  • Maintain meticulous, up-to-date donor, corporate, and foundation records in the CRM system.
  • Streamline advancement operations, tracking systems, and executive donor workflows.
  • Provide operational and administrative support for development initiatives and event-related donor touchpoints to advance the strategic priorities of the Council.

Grant Writing & Institutional Giving

  • Support CEO in the development of compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, applications, and reports tailored to the priorities and requirements of foundation, corporate, and institutional funders.
  • Manage the full grant lifecycle, from identifying and evaluating funding opportunities through proposal development, submission, reporting, renewal, and stewardship.
  • Collaborate with programs, operations, and senior leadership to gather programmatic data, budgets, outcomes, and impact stories that strengthen grant applications and demonstrate organizational impact.
  • Maintain a comprehensive grants calendar and pipeline, tracking deadlines, reporting requirements, awards, renewals, and funder communications to ensure timely and accurate follow-through.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in international relations, communications, business administration, nonprofit management, or a related field required.
  • 3–5 years of experience in nonprofit advancement, development operations, prospect or grant research, executive support, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the fundraising lifecycle, including prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and moves management.
  • Familiarity with institutional grant processes, corporate sponsorships, individual giving, and sustaining member or recurring donor programs.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
