Culver City-based social music app weeSPIN announced a $200,000 round this week as it prepares to launch in beta in the App Store June 23.

weeSPIN, which was founded by Grammy award-winning record producer and engineer Darius Fong, is now looking to grow its preliminary user base to get more feedback on the product. The mobile app is aimed at millennials who want to collaborate with each other and integrate playlists and songs across music-streaming services like Spotify and Soundcloud.

Once they secure more users - and more cues on what users want from weeSPIN - the small team will raise a Series B round in late 2014 or early 2015 so they can grow to about 15 employees. With more bandwidth, the company can focus more on partnerships with lifestyle brands and other local companies.

“We are excited to work on local partnerships with brands, retailers and influencers like KCRW, Handsome Coffee (now Blue Bottle), Apolis, Forever21 just to name a few in order to help drive engagement with customers,” Fong said.

As a music-focused app in LA, weeSPIN is in good company. LA is home to dozens of other music startups to learn from and grow with - ranging from young apps like LuckyPennie, to communities with millions of users like Plug.dj, to high-profile companies like Beats: “We are an LA company and we are proud of that," Fong said.
