My colleague wrote a blog post the other day touting some horrible advice for startups. She said they should leave the echo chamber of startup communities and seek out new frontiers where no startup has gone before.

Well, not exactly the best advice I've heard.

Startups are baby companies and you wouldn't throw a new born into the world and say, "go get'em tiger," would you? The same is true for startups.

I believe businesses incubators where a lot of startups are born serve a vital role for networking opportunities and building strategic relationships that could help the business grow quicker and learn faster.

While your startup is in incubation, don't forget a solid PR plan goes along way to building awareness and client aquistions. In a report published by the Intstitute for Public Relations, researchers found sales closing rates increased in direct proportion to the amount of media coverage a company received.

On my blog, Socially Relevant, I interview the Communications Manager of SMARTfile, an Indianapolis-based startup. Read "How Does PR Help Startups: Interview With Leah Beatty" to learn more.
