From Oshyn to Siteport: adapting to client needs churns out great product

As CEO of both Oshyn and Siteport, Diego Rebosio knows a good content product when he develops one.

Rebosio founded Long Beach-based Oshyn in 2001 to service enterprises like Best Buy, Coca-Cola and Lexus in the web development and content management space. Then about a year ago, he founded Siteport out of Oshyn to provide software that automatically moves content from one CMS to another because “it became really obvious that when it comes to actually moving the content over, it takes a lot of work.”

Because Oshyn’s main objective is to serve its clients in the best way possible, there was enough freedom (and capital) to develop Siteport out of the company and to “point to clients for validation.”

“At Oshyn, we build things that our clients need,” Rebosio said. “That’s the nice thing about being a services company.”

So just by listening to Oshyn’s clients and adapting to their needs, Siteport was born. One year into the venture, Siteport still plays by those same rules and listens to client demand about its CMS-centric product. Siteport’s 10-person team, including three employees in product development, is currently working on an Oracle portal, for example, to expand the CMS types it connects with.

This work of moving an entire site from one CMS to another isn’t just cut and paste, though, Rebosio said: “This kind of work is harder than people realize.” Siteport works to move anywhere from 100 pages to 50,000 pages of unique content to a new CMS. Rebosio describes this as inventing a “moving truck” for content-centric sites.

“You can rent the moving truck or you can have someone else do the packing for you,” he said.

Right now, Siteport serves dozens of clients (Rebosio declined to share an exact number) and is looking to raise additional capital soon. In the meantime, the bootstrapped company is working on combatting prospective users’ belief that the product is too good to be true.

“The main resistance is that since no one else is doing this, they are surprised that it can work for their situation,” Rebosio said.
