PASADENA TO HOST ITS FIRST INTERNATIONAL SPACE APPS CHALLENGE
The International Space Apps Challenge announced today that for the first time in the event’s 3 year history, Pasadena will participate in its global two-day mass-collaborative hackathon focused on driving innovations to address some of the world’s most pressing concerns relevant to life on earth and in space. Pasadena organizers also unveiled the official commemorative poster created by local futurist and design luminary Syd Mead.
“Innovation has always been at the top of Pasadena’s agenda making this event a natural for this great city,” said Joe Brisbois, organizer of the Space Apps Challenge in Pasadena. “This event allows us to showcase on a global stage, the breadth and depth of our many local individuals, public institutions, and progressive private companies who contribute to changing the world every day right here in Pasadena.”
The International Space Apps Challenge was created by NASA in 2012 to help raise global awareness of earthly and extraterrestrial issues and spur innovative solutions to them by harnessing worldwide collaboration among technologists, scientists, designers, artists, educators, entrepreneurs, programmers, developers and students. Since its inception, the International Space Apps Challenge has continued to grow in global popularity and is widely known as the world’s largest hackathon event.
“Pasadena has long played a unique and important role in advancing space exploration and technology development. The addition of Pasadena, a renowned innovation hub, brings a great depth of creativity, critical thinking and energy to this global endeavor.” said Debra Diaz, NASA Chief Information Officer for IT.
“Whether your interest lies in robotics, environmental science, wearable technology, astronomy or app development, the International Space Apps Challenge provides a unique opportunity for people to interact with NASA, engage their passions, and unite around ideas that will improve our planet and our ability to explore the universe,” continued Brisbois.
This year the International Space Apps Challenge will be the largest to date, taking place in more than 130 cities around the world. During the weekend of April 11-12, 2015, in cities from Paris to Pasadena to Pretoria teams of participants will collaborate and engage with publicly available data (including a vast amount of NASA research, photos, and information) to design and present innovative solutions to global challenges. An esteemed panel of local judges will choose winning projects that will be submitted to NASA for global consideration.
