I have to admit hearing about a tech scene in the Los Angeles area is more than interesting, it's damn exciting. I've lived and worked in LA now for 9 years as an software engineer and when I originally came out here the only way I'd meet other developers is at the companies I'd work for. Other then that I'd tell people what I did, they have that glossed over look in their eye as if I was speaking a foreign language, smile kindly, and hastely find another topic of conversation.
As I'm exploring this new scene, the one thing I can't help but wonder, is if I've put myself into a box learning mostly microsoft technologies over the years. When I look around at these new startups or tech companies I'm finding mostly non microsoft shops. Is this the case or is it just an incorrect sample? Heck, even the form for signing up on this site didn't have .net technologies listed, but Java, Python, and Ruby were. Why not microsoft? Is it because of the expense or is there a more fundamental reason I don't understand?
Crap... am I now a modern day cobalt programmer?
