First thing, last thing: Why HyreCar’s CEO sprints up 35 flights of stairs daily

Joe Furnari, CEO of Los Angeles-based HyreCar, describes the company as "essentially an Airbnb for ride share drivers." The peer-to-peer vehicle rental company gives potential ride share drivers who lack a vehicle the opportunity to rent one.

“I feel like many B-to-C and B-to-B tech companies are missing the human touch when offering services to customers,” said Furnari.

In speaking to him for this installment of "first thing, last thing," we were not surprised to learn that he starts every day thinking about people. So, how does he end his days? Basically, by running himself ragged. Read on.

FIRST THING: I spend every morning driving to work, thinking about ways to engage my employees. This is important to me because if your employees are inspired and believe in the mission, it shines through to their interactions with customers.

HyreCar has a hybrid tech/operational model, but at the core it engages customers on a personal level. Creating a personal experience requires engaged and inspired employees.

LAST THING: The last thing I do in the day is run the stairs. We're on the 35th floor of the Gas Tower building in LA. I run down the stairwell and sprint up – max effort, 100 percent exhaustion. It really clears the mind.

Feeling happy, healthy and in shape has an incredible effect on work and productivity. After that, I’m ready to get a good night’s sleep and tackle the next day.
