How the TigerConnect Engineering Team is Helping Improve Healthcare Data 

Staff Software Engineer Ang Li shares how the product team is revamping healthcare data to help providers work more efficiently.

As advanced as modern medicine is, the tech that keeps healthcare data connected is a little like trying to do surgery with only a needle and thread— antiquated. 

Many healthcare providers are stuck using systems that in any other industry seem out of date. But shifting to a new system can often require downtime for providers they simply cannot afford. If a healthcare data record is missing or mislabeled it can mean the difference between life and death for patients. 

Upgrading healthtech is a long and arduous process, which is why the TigerConnect engineering team takes it so seriously. 

Built In spoke with Staff Software Engineer Ang Li, who shared an inside look at the new AI tool that will help providers navigate numerous complex systems to accurately get a better understanding of their schedules. The TigerConnect’s sales team already uses AI to streamline prospect and customer data, so this new offering for providers is taking the team’s technical capabilities to the next level.

TigerConnect is a healthcare communication platform that assists with care collaboration among doctors, nurses, care teams and patients. 

 

What project are you most excited to work on in 2025? What is particularly compelling about this work for you?

The biggest shift in this year’s roadmap is our commitment to AI technology. We believe AI can drive innovation, streamline processes and enhance TigerConnect’s market edge. One of the most exciting developments is our ongoing exploration and advancement of AI-powered features. This feature is designed to revolutionize how care providers manage their daily tasks.

Currently, care providers spend too much time navigating complex systems to check schedules. Our new AI solution will simplify this process by integrating seamlessly into the TigerConnect messaging app they already use. Care providers can simply send a message in the app and instantly receive their schedule. No more wasting time on routine inquiries or searching through cumbersome interfaces. AI will handle it efficiently.

This milestone reduces administrative burdens, enabling care providers to focus on delivering quality care. As AI transforms industries globally, our goal is to harness its power to create smarter, user-friendly features that boost productivity and service quality. This is just the start of our AI journey, and we’re excited to see how these innovations shape a brighter future for our team and clients.

What does the roadmap for this project look like? Who will you collaborate with? What challenges do you anticipate  and how do you envision overcoming them?

Each year, we plan features to enhance functionality and introduce new solutions for our customers. These initiatives help us achieve annual goals while preparing for future challenges. Last year, we prioritized exploring AI integration, and after thorough preparation, we are ready to bring this vision to life.

Our engineers and product managers are collaborating to ensure the final product is polished, user-friendly and impactful. We’re also working closely with our cloud vendor to leverage the latest models and most efficient architecture. However, this effort comes with challenges.

The rapid pace of AI innovation requires us to stay adaptive, continuously evaluating and selecting the most effective models. Simultaneously, we must maintain compliance with healthcare regulations, ensuring our models and infrastructure meet strict security and privacy standards.

Cost is another factor, as AI infrastructure can be expensive. Fortunately, advancements in efficient models should help reduce costs over time. By focusing on innovation and strategic investment, we’re confident in overcoming these challenges and delivering high-quality features.

 

What do you hope to learn from this work to apply in the future?

We have successfully transitioned from a monolithic architecture to a microservices-based one, a challenging yet rewarding endeavor. I’m honored to have worked with such a talented team of engineers who made this transformation possible. I firmly believe in the power of teamwork and collaboration. Every team member contributed with thoughtful insights and adjustments, which I deeply respect. Together, we exceeded expectations by improving service uptime and reducing operational costs — a testament to the team’s dedication and expertise.

Looking ahead, I’m confident our team will tackle new challenges with the same commitment and creativity. Beyond internal efforts, we’ve built a strong partnership with our cloud vendor, engaging in deep collaboration to integrate AI technologies into our product features and development processes.

This marks a pivotal moment for our company, unlocking new opportunities to harness AI’s potential. These advancements will drive innovation, improve efficiency and create new revenue streams. It’s an exciting time, and we’re eager to explore how AI can deliver even greater value to our customers and stakeholders.
