Starting a business is not something everyone can do. Or is it? What’s in the makings of an entrepreneur? If you don’t come from a family of business owners how do you become one yourself? These are all thoughts a student has when contemplating the big question: What do you want to do with your life?

In light of the boom of US startups in recent years Universities are starting to focus on their entrepreneurial programs. The brightest students will most likely build the greatest companies and it’s a race to commit these kids to your program. StartEngine’s 2013 College Index shows us who’s leading the way in breeding the best:

Northwestern University tops the charts with 31 Founders and over $10M invested coming out of their program. High up on the list are Princeton, University of Maryland, Dartmouth and Georgetown to mention a few. It’s usually assumed that big name schools make the list, but the mix of public and private universities is refreshing. This “shatters the myth that only private schools have the right environments to produce innovation”, says Howard Marks, Co-Founder of StartEngine.

What’s important to understand is the main focus is not the number of companies to come from each University but rather the amount of investments that were made in those companies. Anyone can create a company, but the most successful receive investments. With an increasing number of entrepreneurial programs, the US is about to see a rise in creative entrepreneurs.
