WHY CHANGE?
Focus and simplicity. Our new name better reflects our groundbreaking work using artificial intelligence to get life-saving cures to patients more quickly. And it’s shorter and simpler to type and say. It’s a relatively minor change, but we are excited about it nonetheless.
WHY DEEP 6?
We get this question from time to time. “Deep six” is a nautical term. Before sonar was invented, sailors used a weighted piece of rope with distances marked on it (called a sounding line) to gauge the depth of water. “Deep six” is a depth of six fathoms (36 feet). Back then, something tossed overboard at or greater than this depth was believed to be difficult, if not impossible, to recover. How things have changed!
Fast-forward hundreds of years. Today, we are drowning in data, especially in the healthcare industry. (By 2020, the volume of worldwide healthcare data will be 25,000 petabytes, which is equal to 500 billion four-drawer filing cabinets. Whew!) By applying advanced artificial intelligence and natural language processing to clinical data, Deep 6 AI is able to retrieve and make sense of information that was previously thought to be lost in a sea of data. This, in turn, helps bring researchers and patients together in a meaningful way to speed up research and get life-saving cures to the people who desperately need them more quickly.
As a nod to our nautical inspiration, the six bars making up the “E”s in our name represent the six fathoms.
