Last night marked the kick off of AT&T’s Hackathon for Silicon Beach Fest, the developer contest worth $20,000 in cash and prizes. Developers, CTOs, and idea guys were milling about on the third floor of ROC in Santa Monica, casually chit chatting and introducing themselves in hopes of finding similar minds to build the next genius app.

There were shy beginners tucked away in corners and seasoned hackathoners eagerly talking up potential teammates. Walker Warren, a hackathon first timer, said he was there as an idea guy. “I’m hoping to find people who get what I want to do and believe in the potential of it.” Warren declined to mention the details of his idea, but James, a regular hackathoner, encouraged him not to hold back and casually pitch his idea to as many people as possible in the interest of gaining a team.

PA Lava, a developer who’s been to around 10 to 15 hackathons between Los Angeles and San Francisco, explained he was bringing his sister along and letting her choose an idea to work with. Ideas can be tricky though. “You don’t want an idea that will take longer than the length of the hackathon,” says Lava.

Here’s hoping all teams heed that advice. It’s now day two, and programmers are hopefully in full swing of development. The deadline is tomorrow at 6pm, where perhaps the next big app will be revealed.
