Fans of Blizzard games like World of Warcraft or StarCraft have some exciting developments to look forward to.

On Tuesday, a brand new video game studio, Frost Giant, launched from stealth mode. In addition, the Orange County-based company announced that it raised $4.7 million in a seed funding round led by Bitkraft Ventures, as reported by VentureBeat. The report said that this new funding will go toward game development, consumer research and expanding the team and operations. Frost Giant Studios CEO and cofounder Tim Morten confirmed the news in a LinkedIn post.

Frost Giant Studios was created by several video game industry veterans who worked on popular games — including Warcraft III and StarCraft II — for Blizzard Entertainment, but left to work on their own projects.

Although Frost Giant is a brand new video game studio and it hasn’t officially announced its first game, it has revealed that it’s working on an upcoming real-time strategy game. RTS games — like StarCraft — involve action that progresses in real time, not based on turns. This means players must act on their feet and develop effective approaches in order to succeed. But it’s worth noting that this genre of games has become less popular over the past few years, with players opting for first-person shooters or battle royale genres. Frost Giant hopes to bring the RTS genre back.

It’s unknown what Frost Giant’s game will look like, but the idea is enough to excite fans. A handful of publications have covered the Frost Giant announcement, and several Twitch streamers are talking about the news.

“Real-time strategy players are an incredibly passionate community, and they deserve not just a great new game, but one they can share broadly with friends,” Morten said in a statement provided to gameindustry.biz. “Building a worthy successor will take time, but we’re incredibly excited and grateful to carry real-time strategy forward at Frost Giant Studios.”
