Pasadena-based X1 closed a $2.2 million partial close last week to prepare for key hires to power its enterprise search solution.

Famed Pasadena incubator Idealab is the company’s primary investor and has been a supporter since X1 graduated from the program and has now made the transition to “an established software firm,” CEO John Patzakis said.

X1’s team, which is currently at about 55, will be beefing itself up with an overload of developer hires as well as customer support hires to deal with their large enterprise customers.

Since the company launched in 2003, X1’s customers have relied on its suite of eDiscovery and enterprise search products to access corporate data (which can range from CRM data to emails) in a single interface. The X1 team is proud of this interface and its design because it works for various environments like traditional or virtualized desktops and servers in virtual data centers or in the cloud.

X1’s technology, funding and team growth is yet another win for LA’s growing enterprise scene, which is home to other high-growth enterprise companies that raised big sums last year such as OpenX and Edgecast Networks.

“The LA tech community is a bit diffused, but very substantive, which is true for many aspects of Los Angeles,” Patzakis said. “I think the tech community in LA has been an effective support system for us although I would like to see more LA-based venture firms.”

As X1 moves forwards with this funding round, Patzakis said that the LA tech community should look out for even more innovative offerings in the next few months.

“Our recent release of X1 Search, virtual edition has received a tremendous response and you will see some exciting developments in terms of offerings and partnerships with cloud and virtual desktop providers,” Patzakis said. “The unique support of virtual desktop infrastructure demonstrates that X1 is once again a cutting-edge technology that supports our customers’ current as well as future requirements.”
