The Role
We are seeking an experienced editor to lead Law.com's California and West Coast regional content. This is a combination editorial and content-creator role. You will oversee a reporter, help set coverage priorities, guide content development and manage the day-to-day needs of the regional brand. You will also help shape and produce coverage focused on the lawyers, law firms, courts and cases influencing the region's legal markets. Additionally you will help lead local and national data projects, and assist with regional recognition programs.
The right candidate will be an engaged newsroom leader who can multitask, coach reporters, make confident news decisions, produce content, build relationships across the legal community and strengthen our connection with readers throughout California and the West Coast.

The Team
On Law.com's Regional Desk, we cover the lawsuits, lawyers, judges and law firms shaping major legal markets. We move quickly, collaborate closely and share sources, ideas and regional perspective. This editor will oversee a reporter and work with newsroom leaders across Law.com to connect regional developments with our broader national coverage.

Key Responsibilities
What You’ll Lead
  • Lead California and West Coast coverage, setting editorial priorities and ensuring a strong mix of breaking news, analysis and enterprise journalism.
  • Manage and coach reporters, helping them develop sources, sharpen story ideas, improve execution and grow professionally.
  • Develop data-driven content, leveraging proprietary Centellic data and multimedia storytelling.
  • Oversee regional content operations, including newsletters, daily story selection, audience engagement and coordination with other Law.com teams.
  • Direct major editorial initiatives, including awards, surveys, rankings, special reports and other recurring projects.
  • Represent Law.com in the regional legal community, developing relationships with law firm leaders, judges, bar organizations and other key sources and stakeholders.

Why This Role Matters
California and the broader West Coast are among the country's most influential legal markets. This editor will define how Law.com covers the region, develop reporters and help turn local developments into journalism with regional and national impact. While editing and brand leadership are the core responsibilities, the editor will also produce selected content, including articles, analysis, interviews, podcasts and event programming.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
What This Role Requires
  • Strong news judgment and experience setting coverage priorities in a fast-paced newsroom.
  • A record of successfully managing, coaching or mentoring reporters.
  • The ability to edit breaking news, analysis and enterprise journalism with clarity and precision.
  • A strong understanding of business of law and litigation coverage, or the ability to quickly develop it.
  • Creativity when it comes to finding and presenting content – not all stories are best told through words on a page, some are better as graphics, podcasts, videos, etc.
  • The organization and flexibility to balance people management, daily editing and brand responsibilities.
  • Comfort representing Law.com in meetings, at events and in conversations with the legal community.
  • The ability and willingness to produce selected content across formats, including writing, podcasts, interviews and live events.
Preferred Background
  • Experience editing coverage of law, courts, business or another complex subject area.
  • Familiarity with California or other West Coast legal markets.
  • Experience managing newsletters, digital publications or recurring editorial projects.
  • A track record of creating or contributing to written, audio, video or event content.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
