Business Area: Content

Job Category: Editorial

Hourly: $20.00-$35.00 an hour

Union Status: Non-Union

BuzzFeed Inc. is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. We reserve the ability to adjust the final compensation for this role based on the final candidate's experience, skillset, certifications, and geography.

The Role

BuzzFeed is looking for a Contract Weekend Social Media Strategist to help shape how our content is distributed across social platforms, drive engagement, and experiment with new storytelling formats. This person will not just post links—they will repackage BuzzFeed’s best content in innovative, creative ways that resonate with online audiences. The ideal candidate deeply understands internet culture, celebrity news, platform trends, and digital storytelling across Facebook, Instagram, and emerging platforms like Threads and TikTok.

The role is both strategic and hands-on, requiring someone who can write killer social copy, edit short-form video lightly, and design engaging visual posts (memes, carousels, graphics, etc.) using tools like Canva or Photoshop.

This is a remote full-time position, 40 hours a week, a 3-month contract position working Saturday-Wednesday, and it can extend for up to one year.

You Will

  • Plan, package, and publish content across multiple BuzzFeed social media platforms, with a focus on engagement and brand storytelling.
  • Repackage content for social-first formats, including memes, carousels, text-based images, and short-form videos (e.g., Instagram Reels or TikTok snippets).
  • Write attention-grabbing captions and headlines that maximize engagement while maintaining BuzzFeed’s signature voice.
  • Identify viral trends and cultural moments that BuzzFeed should tap into and help shape how we participate in them.
  • Monitor and engage with the BuzzFeed audience in comments and discussions to increase visibility and interaction.
  • Analyze and optimize post performance, tracking both engagement metrics (shares, saves, comments) and referral traffic.
  • Collaborate with editorial and social teams to ensure content is packaged effectively across different audiences.

You Have

  • Experience managing brand social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, etc.).
  • A strong understanding of internet culture, memes, trends, and what makes people click/share.
  • Copywriting skills that adapt to different tones and formats, from snappy tweets to engaging Instagram captions.
  • Light design and video editing skills (Canva, Photoshop, CapCut, Premiere, or similar tools).
  • An experimental mindset—you love A/B testing different formats, headlines, and packaging styles.
  • Proven ability to work fast and independently while staying creative and strategic.
  • A sense of humor — you have unhinged taste in memes
Bonus Points For:
  • Experience running A/B tests for social engagement.
  • Past experience in entertainment, lifestyle, or pop culture media.
  • Experience using AI in your workflow.
Why Work With Us?
  • A fast-moving, creative environment where you’ll help shape how BuzzFeed engages audiences on social media.
  • The opportunity to experiment with new formats and viral storytelling.
  • A supportive, collaborative team that values innovation and engagement-driven strategies.
  • Competitive contract pay and flexible work setup.

Answer these questions to include with your application:

  • What’s the last post on social media that made you laugh out loud, and why?
  • What’s a recent viral trend that BuzzFeed should have jumped on?

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
