About the role

First&Third is a fully remote web design and development agency and a WordPress VIP and Shopify Plus partner. We help clients achieve their business goals through thoughtful, well-executed websites.

We are looking for a Website QA Tester to join us on a remote, part-time contract basis. You will test client websites across desktop and mobile to make sure they look right, work as expected, and support the journeys users need to complete. You will find and document bugs, help developers reproduce them, and retest fixes before changes reach users.

This is a hands-on manual website testing role. You will work through test cases, explore how real users interact with a site, and check that fixes do not break other functionality. We value attention to detail, sound judgment, clear bug reports, and reliable follow-through more than familiarity with every tool on a checklist.

What you will do

  • Create and run practical test cases based on project specifications, designs, and wireframes. Work with Product Managers and Project Managers to clarify expected behavior and flag gaps before testing begins.
  • Perform functional, visual, responsive, smoke, regression, and exploratory testing across agreed browsers and devices. Prioritize critical user journeys and areas affected by each change.
  • Test key website interactions such as navigation, links, forms, and content updates. Check Shopify storefronts from theme changes through cart and checkout, and regression-test WordPress sites after content, plugin, theme, and core changes.
  • Perform routine automated and manual accessibility checks against the project's agreed WCAG version and conformance level, including keyboard navigation, focus behavior, form labels, and contrast. Flag issues that need deeper specialist review.
  • Follow project checklists to validate key GA4 events, Google Tag Manager implementations, and marketing pixels, with support for more complex tracking investigations.
  • Use tools such as Lighthouse to flag performance regressions and review available Core Web Vitals field data when relevant.
  • Run smoke tests before and after launches, and check redirects and metadata during migrations.
  • Write actionable bug reports in ClickUp with reproduction steps, expected and actual behavior, browser/device details, screenshots or recordings, and severity.
  • Work with PMs, designers, and engineers to investigate issues, retest fixes, and track defects through resolution.
  • Provide concise updates on test coverage, blockers, and remaining launch risks. The designated project lead makes the final launch decision based on those findings.

Comprehensive accessibility audits, complex analytics troubleshooting, and building automated test suites are not baseline expectations for this role; any such work would be scoped separately.

What success looks like

  • Critical user journeys are tested against agreed acceptance criteria within the available time.
  • Developers can reproduce reported issues without repeated clarification.
  • Higher-risk defects are surfaced early, fixes are verified, and outstanding issues remain visible.
  • Project leads know what was tested, what was not tested, and what risks remain before launch.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of hands-on website testing experience, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Strong manual testing skills across functional, visual, responsive, and regression testing, including cross-browser and cross-device coverage.
  • Practical familiarity with WordPress and Shopify websites, including content workflows and e-commerce user journeys.
  • Ability to write clear, reproducible bug reports and prioritize issues by user impact and severity.
  • Experience using browser developer tools and cross-browser testing tools such as BrowserStack or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS sufficient to inspect pages and describe issues accurately.
  • Familiarity with routine accessibility checks and tools such as axe or WAVE.
  • Clear, concise communication and the ability to manage testing across multiple projects, flag unclear requirements, and follow issues through to resolution.
  • Reliable availability to work during US business hours. Our team members are based across the US; we will agree on your specific schedule before starting.

Nice to have

  • Deeper experience validating GA4, Google Tag Manager, and marketing pixels.
  • Experience interpreting Core Web Vitals and investigating performance issues.
  • Experience with screen readers such as NVDA or VoiceOver, or more comprehensive WCAG accessibility testing.
  • Experience testing React or other JavaScript front-end frameworks.
  • Experience with ClickUp.
  • Experience with automated testing tools such as Playwright or visual regression tools.
  • Familiarity with AI tools such as Claude or ChatGPT to support test planning or documentation, while independently verifying findings.

How you work

  • You ask questions to understand client goals and focus testing on what matters most to users.
  • You deliver what you committed to and flag early when timing, scope, or missing information puts that commitment at risk.
  • You manage your own time and methods, coordinate priorities with project leads, and communicate tradeoffs when the available hours cannot cover everything.
  • You take ownership of testing and follow-through, working with the team to get issues resolved.

Work with us

If this sounds like a good fit, we would love to hear from you.

  1. Apply: Introduce yourself, briefly describe your hands-on experience testing WordPress and Shopify websites, and share your hourly rate, weekly availability, and time zone. Include an anonymized bug report or a brief example of a consequential issue you caught and how you reported it. Do not share confidential client information.
  2. We will talk: We will set up a video call to discuss your experience, approach, and fit for the engagement.
  3. Show how you work: Finalists will complete a short, paid website testing exercise focused on finding issues, prioritizing them, and writing useful bug reports. We will agree on its time limit and compensation in advance.
  4. Get to work: We will agree on scope, hours, availability, and terms before starting.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
