Job Summary:
Ruggable is seeking a strategic, business-oriented legal leader to oversee our legal function. As a key advisor to the executive team and board, you shape our legal strategy across the organization, proactively identifying risks and opportunities and ensuring our teams are equipped to move quickly within a strong legal framework. You’ll also lead the development of scalable processes, standards, and team capabilities that support sustainable growth. Your perspective will help drive key decisions, from commercial negotiations to governance and board engagement, positioning Legal as a strategic partner to the business.
What You'll Do:
Strategic Legal Leadership
- Serve as the principal legal advisor to executive leadership and the board, offering strategic guidance on key business initiatives
- Anticipate legal risks and opportunities and develop proactive strategies to support growth and innovation across the business
- Translate complex legal issues into practical business advice and enable risk-smart decision making
Corporate, International & Regulatory
- Manage corporate governance, entity management, board and committees processes, including agenda and materials development process, documentation and compliance
- Support international expansions and determine local requirements for new jurisdictions and assist with entity formation
- Support global HTS classifications and origin determinations
- Oversee global regulatory compliance programs and policies across privacy and data security, marketing, product, operations and employment
- Monitor the evolving legal and regulatory landscape and translate into business-relevant guidance
IP & Privacy
- Oversee the company’s global IP portfolio, including IP prosecution, brand protection and enforcement against infringement, counterfeits and developing strategies to reduce grey market and competition
- Oversee the company’s privacy policies and procedures and compliance with relevant privacy regulations
People & Culture
- Advise the HR team on employment law matters including policies, investigations and compliance
- Provide training and guidance to internal teams to promote ethical practices and a compliance-minded culture
Marketing & Partnerships
- Advise the Marketing and Product teams on marketing campaigns and customer retention practices, including risk assessments and preparing terms and conditions
- Review, draft and negotiate licensing and partnership agreements related to the company’s RuggableX and wholesale programs
Team Building & Cross-Functional Enablement
- Develop and manage a lean, high-impact Legal team and manage external counsel relationships and spend
- Create accessible tools, resources and education to empower teams to engage confidently with legal processes
What You'll Need to Have:
Required:
- Qualified attorney and Member of the California Bar (in good standing) or eligible to register as California Registered In-House Counsel
- 10+ years of experience working in a law firm and/or in-house legal department
- Excellent problem-solving capabilities, judgment, communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to provide quick-thinking, pragmatic, business-oriented advice while properly balancing risks and business reward
- Entrepreneurial spirit of a self-starter with an eagerness to build and grow relationships
- Ability to manage workloads, multiple demands and shifting priorities
- Ability to operate autonomously while being a team player who brings a positive attitude to the workplace
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, rapidly-growing workplace
- Desire to grow, learn on the job and expand skill set
Preferred:
- Experience working in the technology/e-commerce sectors
- Experience in implementing and administering compliance programs a plus
- Experience working with companies at a variety of stages and subject to various levels of governance and reporting requirements
Compensation:
- $250,000 - $275,000 per year base salary
- An annual bonus percentage that varies based on level of role
- Employer matching (up to 3% of base salary) for company sponsored 401K plan
