The Role 

Stanley Black & Decker (NYSE: SWK) is seeking a Vice President of Engineering Excellence to provide strategic oversight for end-to-end new product development program management, engineering performance and portfolio management for our core Tools & Outdoor segmentReporting to the Chief Engineering & Technology Officer, this role will oversee the full spectrum of Program Management for all Engineering functions, including our stage-gate development process, deployment of global standards, and oversight of the Program Management Office (PMO) in major Engineering and Design Centers around the world.  

 

The VP, Engineering Excellence will be responsible for establishing and driving the engineering operational cadence for Stanley Black & Decker through process and program management standardization and improvement.  

 

This position is based at our Tools & Outdoor headquarters in Towson, Maryland, though remote locations will be considered.  This role oversees a team of global engineering professionals in the areas of Program Management, Compliance, Testing, Simulation and Portfolio Management/Analytics. 

 

Primary Accountabilities 

  • Provide strategic oversight of the Program Development Portfolio across all core brands including development agility, business performance, risk management and on-time deliveryDrive continuous improvement across the organization to achieve best-in-class performance. 

  • Develop and executive a global strategy to drive engineering design effectiveness with robust standards, maturity models, tools, methods and performance metricsThis includes creating a strategic roadmap to enhance design via computational modeling and analysis, optimized testing and verification, and robust design. 

  • Ensure Engineering Operations adhere to relevant regulations, ISO standards and internal policies with safety protocols and training in place. 

  • Develop and manage systems for collecting, analyzing and reporting performance data and key performance indicators (KPIs) within EngineeringPartner closely with the Chief Engineering & Technology Officer to drive consistency in performance across the globe. 

  • Manage strategies to decrease new product development cycle time, increase the innovation pipeline, and work as a business leader to maximize Stanley Black & Decker’s competitive position, top line margin expansion, productivity gains, free cash flow, meet customer growth objectives and deliver world-class operational metrics. 

  • Lead a best-in-class technology and engineering capability through improved succession planning, organizational assessment, the identification of key skill gaps, and overall talent acquisition and talent development strategies that link with business goals. 

 

Candidate Profile 

  • Senior Leadership experience from a global company known for innovation and engineering excellence. 

  • 15+ years of experience in global companies in advanced technology, engineering and product management functions with experience leading large, geographically dispersed engineering teams 

  • Demonstrated experience in driving significant process improvements and discipline across global engineering functions. 

  • Excellent personal leadership, change management and ability to collaborate and influence cross-functionally—can conduct a dialogue that is intellectually honest, brings out diversity of ideas and creates the appropriate integration/connectivity. 

  • Developer of talent and capabilities; great people leaderCan select and lead both people with deep expertise and people with breadth. 

  • Experience building key alliances with academic institutions, outside labs, partner companies and suppliers in order to enhance the advanced technology thinking and capabilities of the business. 

  • Technical degree, Ph.D. or Masters degree in Engineering from a leading academic institution, plus business education (MBA preferred), professionally active in societies, professional associations and networks. 

  • Personal succession potential and desire to build capability for future leadership roles at Stanley Black & Decker.
