The VMware Platform Operations Engineer is a key technical contributor within the T3 support organization, responsible for supporting and operating RapidScale's VMware-based cloud platforms. This role spans incident response, platform operations, and continuous improvement across compute, networking, and storage layers.
This position is open across Level II, Senior, and Lead levels, with leveling determined based on experience, technical depth, and ability to operate in complex, production environments.
This role requires strong VMware expertise, the ability to operate under pressure, and a continuous improvement mindset within a high-availability, customer-facing environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
USD 101,500.00 - 169,100.00 per year
Compensation:
Compensation includes a base salary in the range of $101,500.00 - $169,100.00. The base salary may vary within the anticipated base pay range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include an incentive program.
Benefits:
The Company offers eligible employees the flexibility to take as much vacation with pay as they deem consistent with their duties, the company's needs, and its obligations; seven paid holidays throughout the calendar year; and up to 160 hours of paid wellness annually for their own wellness or that of family members. Employees are also eligible for additional paid time off in the form of bereavement leave, time off to vote, jury duty leave, volunteer time off, military leave, and parental leave.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Escalation and Incident Management
- Support resolution of escalated VMware incidents across production environments
- Participate in P1 and P2 incident response, contributing to troubleshooting and resolution
- Lead incident bridge calls and coordinate cross-functional response (Senior and Lead)
- Own escalation management and drive critical incidents to resolution (Lead)
- Contribute to and author root cause analysis reports
Platform Engineering and Operations
- Execute changes within VMware environments including cluster updates, patching, and configuration changes
- Support vSphere, NSX-T, vSAN, and VMware Cloud Foundation environments
- Perform advanced operations across compute, storage, and networking layers
- Lead design validation, architecture alignment, and complex platform changes (Senior and Lead)
- Own lifecycle management, patching strategy, and maintenance coordination (Lead)
Networking, Storage, and Virtualization
- Support NSX-T operations including segmentation, routing, and edge services
- Perform vSAN operations including health checks, storage policy management, and performance tuning
- Assist in multi-site and hybrid cloud configurations
- Lead advanced NSX-T design and multi-site networking strategies (Lead)
Automation and Continuous Improvement
- Execute and maintain automation scripts and tooling
- Contribute to automation frameworks using PowerCLI, Ansible, Python, or Terraform
- Identify recurring issues and contribute to long-term fixes
- Drive automation strategy and reduce operational toil at scale (Lead)
Documentation and Process Excellence
- Maintain accurate runbooks, SOPs, and technical documentation
- Follow established escalation and operational processes
- Define and enforce documentation and operational standards (Senior and Lead)
Mentorship and Team Contribution
- Collaborate with team members and share knowledge
- Provide guidance to junior engineers (Senior)
- Mentor, coach, and support team development and hiring efforts (Lead)
LEVEL DIFFERENTIATION
Level II Engineer
- Executes advanced troubleshooting with guidance on complex issues
- Supports P1 and P2 incidents as part of escalation team
- Builds depth across VMware technologies and operational processes
- Contributes to documentation and process adherence
Senior Engineer
- Independently resolves complex incidents across VMware environments
- Leads incident response and root cause analysis efforts
- Contributes to platform design decisions and operational improvements
- Acts as a primary escalation point for Level I and Level II engineers
- Provides mentorship and technical guidance
Lead Engineer
- Owns the most complex platform issues and critical escalations
- Leads cross-functional incident response and platform stabilization efforts
- Drives platform engineering decisions, lifecycle strategy, and automation initiatives
- Defines operational standards, processes, and best practices
- Acts as a technical leader across the organization and mentors the broader team
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements
Level II Engineer
- Bachelor's degree in a related discipline and 2 years of experience in a related field
- Or a master's degree with up to 2 years of experience
- Or 6 years of relevant professional experience
Senior Engineer
- Bachelor's degree in a related discipline and 4 years of experience
- Or a master's degree with 2 years of experience
- Or PhD with up to 1 year of experience
- Or 8 years of relevant professional experience
Lead Engineer
- Bachelor's degree in a related discipline and 6 years of experience
- Or a master's degree with 4 years of experience
- Or PhD with 1 year of experience
- Or 10 years of relevant professional experience
Core Technical Experience
- Hands-on VMware vSphere experience in enterprise environments
- Experience troubleshooting production VMware environments
- Familiarity with NSX-T networking concepts
- Exposure to vSAN and storage operations
- Experience working in high-availability, production environments
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
Advanced Technical Expectations (Senior and Lead)
- Proven ability to independently resolve P1 and P2 incidents
- Deep expertise in NSX-T including micro-segmentation, routing, and edge services
- Hands-on vSAN design and operations
- VMware Cloud Foundation lifecycle and operations experience
- Strong scripting and automation skills including PowerCLI, Ansible, Python, or Terraform
CERTIFICATIONS (PREFERRED)
- VCP-DCV
- VCAP-DCV (Deploy or Design) strongly preferred for Senior and Lead
- NSX-T certification (VCP-NV or VCAP-NV)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- VMware Cloud Foundation or Aria Suite experience
- Familiarity with ITSM processes including SLA, change, and problem management
- Experience with enterprise storage vendors such as NetApp, Pure Storage, or Dell EMC
- Exposure to DevOps or GitOps practices
- Experience with enterprise backup solutions such as Veeam and VMware VADP
