Vice President, Legal (Environmental Attorney)

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated in-house environmental lawyer to join our dynamic team as Vice President, Legal (Environmental Attorney). This role will be a key member of the Rexford’s eight person Legal team, reporting to the General Counsel. This role is integral to our mission of creating and preserving value through proactive legal collaboration, transaction optimization and risk mitigation. The successful candidate will apply their expertise in environmental law and risk management to contribute to top-line and bottom-line financial results.

Location: Hybrid: Los Angeles, CA or Costa Mesa, CA

Vice President, Legal (Environmental Attorney) Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply environmental law and risk management expertise to support Rexford’s financial results through proactive legal collaboration, transaction optimization and risk mitigation.
  • Collaborate closely with the Senior Environmental Project Manager and departments such as Asset Management, Leasing, Property Operations and Investments to anticipate, mitigate and manage environmental risks.
  • Serve as the in-house expert on all environmental law matters, including reviewing and drafting lease and purchase agreement provisions related to environmental law and hazardous materials.
  • Steer strategy on environmental insurance and understanding policy provisions.
  • Develop business acumen by actively participating in business and strategic discussions within the company.
  • Lead a variety of regularly occurring environmental meetings with internal and external stakeholders to discuss environmental risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Provide responsive and expedited turnaround on urgent matters to enhance Rexford growth-drivers, value creation and competitive advantages.
  • Maximize legal transactions handled in-house to reduce costs, mitigate risks, avoid costly disputes and drive revenue.
  • Actively manage outside environmental legal counsel, environmental insurance brokers and insurers and environmental consultants.
  • Proactively lead enterprise risk management (ERM) functions related to environmental and insurance risks, managing the tracking and collaboration of ongoing and potential risks, including environmental and regulatory issues.
  • Oversee certain risk management and insurance-related matters to ensure comprehensive risk mitigation and compliance.

Vice President, Legal (Environmental Attorney/Risk Management) Qualifications and Experience:


  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admitted to practice law in California (registered in-house counsel acceptable).
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in environmental law, with a strong focus on transactional work and risk management.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with senior management and various departments within a company.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to participate in strategic discussions.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills to lead environmental meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience in managing outside legal counsel, insurance brokers and environmental consultants.
  • Demonstrated responsiveness and ability to provide expedited turnaround on urgent matters.
  • Self-starter with positive attitude and ability to multi-task in a high work volume, fast-paced environment.

Rexford Industrial's total reward plan includes a premier benefits package, bonus eligibility and long-term stock incentives. The expected salary range for this role is $220,000 to $250,000, with a 40% discretionary annual bonus target and stock grant eligibility.*The actual salary and total compensation offered depend on a variety of factors, which include, without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location where the job will be performed. The final salary and total compensation will be described in any offer letter.

*These stock grants are subject to approval by the Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors, are currently subject to vesting over a four-year period, with 25% of the grant vesting per year, and require continued employment on the grant date and each applicable vesting date.
