Job Description:

Vice President, Commercial Counsel

NewAmsterdam Pharma is an innovative biotech company with the experience and expertise to deliver across its ambitious clinical, regulatory, and commercial goals. Our robust scientific approach focuses on advancing a new era of life-saving treatments for lipid-related diseases. Our vision is that people at risk for heart disease can take control of their health and live longer, fuller lives. Our team is led by a world-class team of industry veterans and key opinion leaders, including some of the world’s preeminent cardiometabolic experts and we foster a passionate, supportive culture that is backed by a high level of integrity and inclusivity.

The Opportunity
NewAmsterdam Pharma is preparing for the launch of its first commercial product, obicetrapib, and seeks an experienced, business-minded Commercial Counsel to support launch readiness and the buildout of commercial capabilities. This attorney will partner closely with Commercial, Medical Affairs, Finance, Compliance, and other functions to develop practical, compliant solutions that advance the business and support patients.

The ideal candidate is a positive, solutions-oriented legal partner with strong business and legal judgment, a roll-up-your-sleeves mentality, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, evolving environment. Core expertise should include market access, trade and distribution, and patient support programs, with familiarity in HCP engagements, sales, marketing and other commercial programs, and review of promotional and non-promotional materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Market Access: Advise on payer and PBM engagement, formulary access, contracting, pricing, reimbursement, rebate arrangements, government program considerations, and other access initiatives.
  • Trade & Distribution: Counsel on channel strategy, wholesaler and specialty pharmacy relationships, distribution arrangements, service-fee structures, data arrangements, inventory/product-flow issues, and related contracts.
  • Patient Support Programs: Advise on benefits verification, prior authorization support, copay assistance, patient assistance programs, adherence and education services, privacy, fraud and abuse, and hub/vendor relationships.
  • Strategic Partnership, Contracting and General Support
  • Serve as a trusted legal advisor to the commercial organization before and after launch, translating legal and regulatory requirements into clear, practical, business-oriented advice.
  • Partner with business leaders to understand objectives, anticipate issues, assess risk in context, and develop creative, compliant paths forward.
  • Support launch strategies, capabilities, policies, business processes, and cross-functional decision-making across Legal, Compliance, Commercial, Medical Affairs, Finance, Market Access, Patient Services, and other functions.
  • Take ownership of matters from issue identification through resolution, working hands-on with business partners in a fast-moving environment where priorities may shift quickly.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate agreements supporting launch and commercialization; develop scalable templates, playbooks, processes, policies, training, and commercial legal capabilities as the organization grows.

In addition to demonstrated expertise in market access, trade and distribution, and patient support programs, candidates must have sufficient familiarity with the following areas to identify relevant legal and regulatory issues and provide or obtain appropriate legal guidance. Deep expertise in these areas is not required. However, significant experience and expertise in one or more of these areas is preferred and will be a differentiator among candidates.

  • HCP Engagements & Sales, Marketing and other Commercial Programs: Provide or coordinate legal guidance on advisory boards, speaker programs, consulting engagements, sponsorships, congress activities, exhibits, business rationale, FMV, contracting, and related compliance considerations.
  • Materials Review: Support review of promotional, disease awareness, payer, patient, medical, scientific education, and other external-facing materials, providing practical guidance on FDA promotional requirements and related standards.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and admission in good standing to at least one U.S. state bar.
  • 10+ years of relevant legal experience advising pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or life sciences companies, in-house and/or at a law firm.
  • Demonstrated expertise in market access, trade and distribution, and patient support programs, including relevant healthcare fraud and abuse, government program, privacy, and commercialization considerations.
  • Experience supporting pharmaceutical or biotechnology product launch and advising on complex commercial arrangements with sophisticated healthcare and life sciences counterparties.
  • Familiarity with HCP engagements, sales, marketing and other commercial programs, and promotional and non-promotional communications review; deeper experience in one or more areas is a plus.
  • Strong legal and business judgment, communication skills, relationship-building ability, adaptability, and comfort operating with ambiguity and competing priorities.
  • Practical, accountable, hands-on approach with the ability to translate complex requirements into clear advice and actionable solutions.
  • NAP has adopted an on-demand workplace philosophy. This remote role requires in-person attendance at the NAP office in the Philadelphia area based on business needs and work requirements rather than a set office schedule.

What Success Looks Like

The successful candidate will be viewed as a trusted partner who helps the business accomplish its objectives effectively and responsibly. They will combine strong legal expertise, sound business and legal judgment, curiosity, humility, creativity, and a bias toward action.

  • Seek to understand the business objective, commercial context, patient needs, and industry realities before developing legal solutions.
  • Bring a “how can we get there?” mindset to difficult questions while maintaining appropriate legal and compliance standards.
  • Distinguish theoretical risk from meaningful risk, communicate clearly, and help leaders make informed decisions.
  • Be a hands-on contributor who is willing to roll up their sleeves, take ownership, and do what is needed to move important work forward.
  • Build strong relationships across Commercial, Medical Affairs, Finance, Compliance and other functions.
  • Be energized by the opportunity to build capabilities, solve new problems, and help execute an exceptional first commercial launch.

Leadership & Working Style
We value attorneys who combine technical excellence with a strong commercial mindset.  The successful candidate should enjoy being close to the business and learning not only what colleagues want to accomplish, but why it matters. They should engage early in the development of business strategies rather than simply review decisions after they have been made.

This is a hands-on role for someone who is equally comfortable advising on strategic issues and working through the details necessary to execute. They will take ownership, move work forward, engage early with business strategies, and help colleagues evaluate alternatives and find practical ways to proceed.

This individual should enjoy working in a fast-paced, evolving environment where priorities can change quickly as the company prepares for and executes its first commercial launch. They should be able to assess what matters most, reprioritize when circumstances change, and remain responsive and effective under tight timelines.

Above all, this person should be excited by the opportunity to help NewAmsterdam Pharma build commercial capabilities and enable a world-class launch of its first commercial product.

Salary and Benefits:
We offer a competitive base salary, annual bonus, and long-term incentives. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, dental and vision coverage, term life and disability coverage, and retirement plans.
NewAmsterdam Pharma is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, marital status, race, color, national origin, ancestry, ethnicity, religion, age, veteran status, disability, genetic information, or any other basis protected by federal, state or local law.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
