MongoDB’s mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build and run applications anywhere—on premises, or across cloud providers. With offices worldwide and over 175,000 new developers signing up to use MongoDB every month, it’s no wonder that leading organizations, like Samsung and Toyota, trust MongoDB to build next-generation, AI-powered applications.

The MongoDB Atlas team owns our database as a service offering, which is our fastest growing product which allows users to deploy and manage fault-tolerant, globally distributed MongoDB databases across multiple cloud providers in just a few clicks.

As leader of the Billing & Payments team, you will own the billing and payment processing platform that handles over 70% of the revenue for a ~$2B public company. This established team is undergoing rapid expansion and, in this leader-of-leaders position, you will shape the future of the Billing team which includes both Product Management and Engineering.

This role can be based out of our MongoDB offices or remotely in the United States and Canada.

In this role, you will …
  • Oversee the delivery of accurate, timely billing to our customers
  • Lead multiple globally distributed engineering teams creating a positive culture, handling career growth and performance conversations, proactively setting vision and direction, and removing blockers
  • Own internal platform services and customer-facing features, and operate them with excellence
  • Partner with stakeholders across the business including Product, Engineering, Accounting, Finance, Sales, Data Science, and Internal Audit, with visibility all the way up to the executive level
  • Operate as an owner of the entire business, balancing your functional expertise and team needs in service of our strategic objectives
The ideal candidate will have...
  • 15+ years of experience leading product management and software engineering teams, including experience leading across multiple management levels
  • Experience leading cross-functional, multi-year projects from inception to delivery
  • Proven experience leading on-time delivery across stakeholder groups, including Product, Design, and Sales, while demonstrating strong ownership and accountability
  • An ability to make and evaluate realistic assessments of project complexity
  • Motivation to take backend systems from good to great, through effective change management for scale
  • Hands-on experience with 3rd party billing platforms like Stripe, Zuroa, Meter, Metronome, etc.
  • Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure billing platforms
  • The ability to optimize talent across teams – leveraging existing budget to deliver more faster – including deploying senior IC engineers, Product Managers, and TPMs to add velocity
  • Experience building, evolving and scaling complex distributed systems and/or database management systems, with a focus on high performance and reliability
  • Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • A demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive and high-functioning team environment, and to developing future leaders
  • Additional desirable qualities include comfort with ambiguity and change, and a strong focus on process and efficiency

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
