About the Role

The Admitted Underwriting Quality & Controls Manager is a highly visible leadership role, responsible for shaping and elevating PURE’s admitted underwriting practice. This leader serves as the architect of our underwriting quality framework - transforming insights from across field underwriting into meaningful action that strengthens execution, sharpens standards, and fuels sustainable, profitable growth.

Reporting to the AVP, Underwriting Quality & Technical Standards within the Underwriting & Product Excellence (UPE) Team, this role offers a unique platform to directly influence the future of PURE’s underwriting practice. The role partners closely with field and home office leaders to ensure underwriting philosophy and delegated authority are clear and adhered to and reinforces a culture of continuous improvement by identifying education opportunities and celebrating underwriting success, while ensuring underwriting adherence to key controls and regulatory requirements.

This is an ideal opportunity for a high-performing underwriter seeking to broaden their impact, influencing underwriting excellence at scale, strengthening selection discipline, and helping define what “great underwriting” looks like across the organization.

What You’ll Do

Lead and Evolve PURE’s Underwriting Quality Framework

  • Set the strategic agenda for underwriting quality reviews, identifying themes and focus areas aligned with business priorities, emerging risk trends, and underwriting strategy.
  • Own and evolve the Admitted Underwriting Quality Review Program to ensure it delivers high-quality, balanced, and actionable insights.
  • Deliver monthly Quality Insights across New Business and Portfolio Management (renewals, endorsements, etc.), highlighting execution trends, celebrating underwriting excellence, and surfacing opportunities for refinement.
  • Translate findings into meaningful recommendations that inform underwriting education, resource clarification, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Partner with Field Leadership to ensure clear follow-through on action items and continuous improvement.

Build and Lead a High-Performing Audit Network

  • Recruit, develop, and lead a team of volunteer underwriting auditors across regions.
  • Provide coaching and calibration to ensure audits are thoughtful, consistent, and aligned with underwriting standards.
  • Create a meaningful development experience for auditors while maintaining high-quality review outputs.
  • Foster a culture of constructive feedback, shared learning, and underwriting pride.

Shape and Safeguard Underwriting Authority

  • Serve as steward of the Admitted Underwriting Authority framework, ensuring authority limits evolve alongside underwriting experience, business complexity, and risk appetite.
  • Align delegated authority structure with underwriting development pathways to support efficient decision-making while maintaining strong controls.
  • Oversee authority delegation governance, including verifying authority statements are appropriately signed, documented, and aligned with PURE Online permissions.
  • Ensure seamless technology enablement of authority rules, including development and maintenance of authority logic within Sapiens Decision.
  • Partner cross-functionally to eliminate gaps or overlaps in authority between underwriting and adjacent functions.

Strengthen Governance & Represent Underwriting in Enterprise Forums

  • Represent Underwriting in internal and external audit initiatives, serving as a trusted partner to the Internal Audit team.
  • Influence internal audit focus areas to align with underwriting priorities and emerging risk considerations and drive post-audit action items to strengthen underwriting execution.
  • Oversee quarterly underwriting authority and quality control certifications in accordance with JSOX requirements.
  • Coordinate underwriting responses to annual Tokio Marine audits, reinsurance audits, regulatory inquiries, and market conduct exams.
  • Ensure underwriting governance processes remain robust, streamlined, and aligned with enterprise standards.

Drive Continuous Improvement Across the Underwriting Practice

  • Identify systemic opportunities to improve underwriting consistency, clarity, and execution.
  • Partner with Underwriting Leadership and UPE to translate quality findings into targeted training, education, and resource enhancements.
  • Continuously refine reporting, governance, and quality review processes to enhance efficiency and impact.
  • Serve as a thought partner to underwriting leaders, providing insight into performance trends and emerging opportunities.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • 7+ years of Property & Casualty underwriting experience, ideally within the high-net-worth segment.
  • Deep understanding of underwriting principles and portfolio management.
  • A respected underwriting professional who identifies patterns, thinks systemically, and is motivated to shape underwriting at scale.
  • Strong analytical capabilities with the ability to translate findings into strategic insights and actionable recommendations.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to deliver thoughtful coaching feedback and influence senior stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to lead through influence across regions and functions without direct authority.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong execution discipline.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and business systems; Smartsheet experience a plus.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
